New BMW X7 iPerformance Concept – This Is It!

BMW promised to unveil something pretty big at the Frankfurt Motor Show and they weren’t kidding as the company will introduce the new X7 iPerformance concept.

Designed to preview the upcoming production model, the pictures provided by Wheelsage show the concept is a massive crossover with an enormous grille that is gaudy enough to make an Escalade blush. The bold styling is visible elsewhere as the concept has vertical styling elements in the front air intakes and an impressive amount of metallic trim.

Moving further back, we can see flush-mounted door handles and an electric charging port on the front fender. Designers also installed massive alloy wheels and a panoramic glass roof. Rounding out the styling features are a ventilated rear bumper and slender taillights.

The cabin takes a different approach as it appears much more luxurious and subtle than the exterior. Details will be announced on September 8th but we can see the concept has two-tone leather seats, wood trim, and bright accents. Technology will also pay a major role as drivers will be surrounded by a digital instrument cluster, an iDrive infotainment system, and a futuristic steering wheel.

While rumors initially suggested the concept would feature a fuel-cell powertrain, that doesn’t appear to be the case. Instead, the X7 iPerformance will likely use a plug-in hybrid powertrain like the 740e iPerformance which has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is backed up by an electric motor and a 9.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The production model is slated to be offered with at least three different engines including a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder with 335 hp (250 kW) and a 4.4-liter TwinTurbo Turbo V8 developing 445 hp (332 kW). There could also be a diesel-powered X7 xDrive 40d but a U.S. launch remains uncertain at this point.

Thanks to Niko for the tip!

  • Honda NSX-R

From the outside it basically looks like an LX570 with BMW sheetmetal

    • Bo Hanan

Don’t all large SUV’s share a similar shape? The difference is in the details. And this is BMW’s version of what everybody is doing.
I like it and it will be interesting to see how BMW makes a 7000lbs car, “handle.”

    • seriously

Im surprised so many people liked this comment…wait no im not its a blog most people are idiots……..if it has BMW sheetmetal (which doesnt make sense taken literally IM assuming you meant to say BMW styling) than it doesnt look like an LX at all. So stupid comment; not to mention most suvs have a similar profile so if it has an SUV profile and BMW styling that means it looks like a BMW…….gotta love Blog idiots

How do you say ugly in German????

      • Tera Patric

Thank you for telling it like it is. Most German autophiles will praise German cars no matter how ugly or strange a particular car may be and then wannabe bandwagon posters will jump on board with effusive praises, like the X6 and X5GT for example. Put a Lexus or Acura badge on the same car and suddenly, it’s a hideous car (the ZDX covered that aspect LOL). Even though I like the design, I respect your unbiased opinion and will perhaps agree to disagree on our styling opinion of this X7.

        • Auf Wiedersehen

Even though my comment was a reply to PK for how to say Ugly in German, I do agree with him, this is not attractive.

“I respect your unbiased opinion and will perhaps agree to disagree on our styling opinion of this X7.”

Thanks! I wouldn’t want this or any other automotive styling to come between us. :p)

  • Ludzo

BMW is dead quite some time, and they always bring us the proof over and over.
Fire the main designer and bring someone who loves the brand like Mercedes new designer loves his brand.
Last time they did a great design was with the gran coupe 6 series and before that m3 e46. Rest in peace my once beloved car brand.

    • Kagan

if you rely on economics you become that!

    • Dennis James

Actually, their latest designs look like a hard struggle between the designers, sales managers and the older top managers. The new 8-series and the new 4-series may signal that the designers won the battle, but not until their entire line of cars was ruined. Look at the new 5-series, 7-series, X5, even the new X3…the definition of boring. I just hope and pray that the new 3-series won’t be ruined too, because I need to replace mine soon…

  • eb110americana

BMW needs to stop putting that bucktoothed grille on–anything.

    • donald seymour

I actually love the grille. It’s very art deco.

    • Auf Wiedersehen

      NEVER gonna happen…Ever

      • eb110americana

I don’t mean *all* twin-kidney grilles, just that one. They also used it on the 8-Series concept, and the 7-Series is dangerously close.

    • Dirtdogger

You do realize the twin kidney grill is part of BMW’s brand identity much like the hofmeister kink

      • eb110americana

What did I just say? Anyway, by that logic, 4 wheels are also part of their heritage, so they should be all-clear to have giant ugly ones! What? Don’t like ’em? Too bad. Heritage.

        • Dirtdogger

Clearly you didn’t read and posting a picture is what owners can do with their cars doesn’t change the facts most if not all companies have ways to “brand themselves.” and my original comment was for your first comment regrading the grill, and the reason why the put it on their cars.

  • Comp1

More edgy Volvo XC 90 for sure!

    • Six_Tymes

      yeah good point!

  • Eugene Naw

What the f*ck is this ?!

    • gbmike25

  • Six_Tymes

Great looking, sharp and elegant VOLVO XC90 + Horrifyingly ugly Lexus = X7 iPerformance concept

  • no25

it’s not terrible, but it’s not all that great. the interior is, once again, typical BMW, and the exterior is just an X5 enlarged turned into a concept. The front grille is also horrendous.

    • Nordschleife

It’s very concept vehicle extra. I believe the production version will be boring but better looking.

  • Leconte Dave

    Kill it with fire..

  • Mynameis Taylor

thats the interior the 7 series SHOULD have had

  • Mike Gonzalez

If the concept is already ugly imagine how terrible the final design will be

  • ediotsavant

Times have sure changed. Now the Germans are inspired by the Japanese, lots of Lexus cues in that design.

  • matrem

Fire the design staff. Something is very wrong in Bavaria.

    • Vantoom

Thats why they hired Jozef Kabaň recently

  • Erzhik

Audis are more exciting than BMWs nowadays. Hell, even Volvo is more exciting.

    • getoffme

      Audis? hah NOPE.

      • nastinupe

So you would take the Q7 over this? Ha ha ha, the Q7 looks like a jacked up station wagon boxy thing.

        • Kagan

          maybe but this is worse!

        • Belthronding Tinuviel

Nothing could be worse than Q7

    • NupeSquare7

Maybe the upcoming Q8, but certainly not the rest of Audi SUV stable. Don’t get me wrong this concept is horrendous, however the newX1, X2, X3 and X4 gave me hope………. But this is such a disappointment.

  • Zandit75

Too many vertical lines. Considering how sexy the 8 series and Z4 concepts looked, this is a major disappointment.

  • steve

Strange looking car – side view has echos of Range Rover/Nissan Patrol/Lexus mashup!

  • Mynameis Taylor

    I like it

  • ToniCipriani ✓pǝᴉɟᴉɹǝʌ
    • really???? You mean because they are both hidious?

  • MarketAndChurch

Not happy with the grille, but this should make a great alternative to the range rover. I just don’t see this being a serious 7-seater.

Maybe we’ll see an extended version of this so that it can competently take on the GLS.

  • Mark S

    That Grille……

  • Nordschleife

If this is indeed it and it looks to be this really needs to be toned down for production. Especially the rear end L-shaped elements.

    • ascariss

Unlike the 8er an Z4 concepts, this is basically a tarted up production model.

  • Big Black Duck

    looks like an angry beaver

  • David Wang

At least it’s different from the X1 and X3. Mercedes Russian doll design language is too lazy. I bet the next gen GLS will look like a fat GLC

    • donald seymour

      Thank you.

  • I think Bentley’s EXP9 concept looked better no? Yes it’s an insult if you wonder.

    • B.Stokes

I agree. I think the EXP9 concept looked better then the production version of the Bentley. They should have ignored the haters and went with the concept design language.

  • Nathan

Love it — lets hope that BMW is beginning to get their mojo back…

    • donald seymour

You and apparently only me want this to happen.

  • B.Stokes

The front is ok, the side a rear are perfect. I’m sure the overall sharpness of the profile will be toned down for the production version and more of an extended X5. The interior is what the 7-series should have been.

  • Ary Wisesa

OH NO… That grille! It makes Lexus LX’s spindle grille look like an art masterpiece. At least LX’s grille has its intricacy in its geometric patterns. I really hope this BMW grille won’t make it into production. Please make it more appealing BMW.

  • LJ

    That. Is. Awful.

  • Ali

Dear Lord, we are gathered here to thank you for giving us the brains that designed the beloved father of all, best 4 x 4 x Far the mighty Range Rover ..

  • enthusia

I’ve said it countless times before, but GOD I miss the bangle era.
And that interior is beyond played out, you’d think for a concept they would do something bold and different…

    • joey

I miss the Bangle era too, but I love BMW interior design, their serious looking interiors stand the test of time.

  • Lyonel Baratheon

    looks like a Chinese fake

  • Bob

    Lexus called…

  • Kagan

Uch………..could be a ssangYong or a bad chines copy!

  • steve

Interior is stunnng – outside is a bit bland

  • SteersUright

Gross. BMW’s have gotten so ugly as of late. Why are they bastardizing their famous kidney grilles like that too? BMW’s looked damn near perfect in the 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s. I guess it could only last so long…

  • disqus_83g6mJmr6l

    looks very impressive

  • Knotmyrealname

The ‘face’ that is created by looking through the steering wheel to the instruments… just makes me laugh.

  • TheHake

This monstrosity should be killed with fire.

  • GTR nismo

This car is ugly like the all new X4.

  • Have we ever witnessed that the production model looked better than the concept?

  • Bash

    Looks Chinese. enough said.

  • Dennis James

This is the most “non-BMW” BMW that I have ever seen. It’s like a joke made by the BMW design team 🙂

  • Jorge Teixeira

Can the BMW grille get any bigger (and uglier)? The answer is yes

    • Auf Wiedersehen

Looks like it was scaled up on photoshop

  • izzey04

seriously BMW….big ugly nostril…kind of disappointed..BMW fanboy here

  • f1300

That concept makes me rethink on many statements over the Bangle-design…

  • Auf Wiedersehen

    Hmmm…I dunno…

Love the old school side pipes….Oh..wait…..never mind

  • ctk4949

  • Tumbi Mtika

  • Sybill Julian

    damn those bullnoses

  • Marc Gruben

    It’ll look better after they’ve crash-tested it

  • Bob White

The grill is too small and needs to be more intimidating. Lol

  • Shobin Drogan

    WTF am I looking at?

  • ErnieB

    Jesus that’s ugly!

  • Sjaak

    makes me sick…..

  • Rich Money

quite possibly the ugliest BMW i’ve ever seen. truly sad.

  • Sébastien

It makes the Bentayga looks “nice”

  • Dirtdogger

Meh ill wait to see the actual production version, but the concept has some “questionable design elements” to say the least

  • psiqtas

WOW – a little bit of competition everywhere – Volvo, Lincoln, MB, Lexus…

  • nik

the absurdly tall vents in the rear, side and front ruin the cars proportions – it looks ridiculous!

  • Vantoom

Damn ugly…BMW always does an ugly first gen model (remember firts gen X5, X3, 1er, GT5?) and then somwhow work their grades up later.

  • Cobrajet

It’s just a concept, it will really look like a stretched X5.

  • Six Thousand Times

    Disgusting, actually.

  • sidewaysspin

    Almost a school bus now.

  • Definitely has presence,

    Me like.
