New Dodge Challenger And Charger Reportedly Coming In 2021 With Maserati Ghibli’s Platform

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is apparently committed to shifting the next generations Dodge Challenger and Charger to the same architecture underpinning the Maserati Ghibli.

AutoNews reports that with this move, the two models will become lighter, and more fuel efficient, compared to their predecessors, and both of them are expected to debut in 2021.

However, until the FCA-owned brand will be ready to pull the covers off, the Challenger and Charger will be facelifted one last time in 2019, and additional versions are believed to be rolled out before the new generations come, in order to keep customers interested.

The Dodge Journey will also live on, with an entirely new iteration that’s said to arrive in 2019, underpinned by the Grigio platform, which will be shared with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. Moreover, the new Journey will be produced in Italy, instead of Mexico, and it will be offered with seating for five.

Dodge axed Grand Caravan last month, as it didn’t comply with safety regulations, but the minivan will return in 2019, with a refreshed design, as will the Durango three-row SUV.

There are still no plans for a successor of the Viper, and things don’t look particularly good for the Barracuda either, a 2-door convertible that was previously rumored, since the Charger and Challenger will move to a new platform, and the Dart compact car won’t be replaced either, after production had ended last year.

I wonder if they can put the next 300 on the Ghibli platform? To me it makes more sense to have the 300, Charger and Challenger all on the same platform as they are now. It would be cheaper too. Instead of waiting for the bigger Alfa to put the 300 on that platform.

    • Merc1

All of these cars on the same platform now anyways!!!

    • supermanuel

They’ve only just announced that the 300 replacement was being developed on the Giorgio platform but is now scrapped. The platform used by the Ghibli is the same as that used by Quattroporte and there has always been the suggestion that this is effectively the same platform used by the existing 300 (and is therefore a development of the old Merc platform), although FCA denies that. Platform isn’t the correct word to use anyway is it?

      • Auf Wiedersehen

        Chassis architecture?

        • Merc1

          Yes.

          M

        • europeon

It’s more like the electrical and ancillary systems, the chassis has little to do with the LX platform one.

      • eb110americana

Yes, as you have laid things out, that is pretty accurate. If you look at the Maserati platform next to the Mopar one when you pop the hood, it is pretty clear that stuff is in the same place. Things have evolved considerably, but you can still trace evolution. They really deserve a new chassis for all of those models, at least to lose a bunch of weight and to keep up with true sport sedans of today and tomorrow. Do one. Do it right, and then spin off and evolve from there.

      • Ed Ward

The Giorgio is based on the cusw platform, upgraded and modified for red, not based on Chrysler’s Lx like the ghibli/quattroporte.

        • supermanuel

Yes, I wan’t suggesting that Giorgio was related to LX.

    • Vanquish

The last article said they canceled the replacement for the 300 all together

  • Alexander Carabitses

I honestly can’t believe that the Grand Caravan is going to be refreshed. Also, as of this coming February, the Challenger will turn ten years old, while the Journey turned ten earlier this month.

    • donald seymour

      Dang!

  • Alexandro Pietro

The Ghibli are NO Fiat platform as are today´s 300 ,Charger and Challenger.Jeremy Clarcson is wrong call Maserati and Alfa Romeo;”FIAT platform”,because don´t have FIATs RWD in the world…

    • supermanuel

Don’t worry Alexander- only pre-pubescent boys listen to anything Clarkson says these days.

  • Merc1

It’s all the same platform anyway!!!!

    M

    • Thomas

No, it is not. Please, if you know, tell us more.

      • Six Thousand Times

He’s not entirely correct. The middle section is largely shared between them (with some lighter steels used for the Maser) BUT the front and back sections are unique.

        • europeon

It’s not really the chassis, as I said before. I had the chance to look at both recently, and they’re quite different, even if they might have started from a common point. It’s the stuff like the electrical and ancillary systems that are shared in the sense of “platform”.

          • Six Thousand Times

Right, I should have been more clear. The 300/Charger don’t share a wheelbase with the Ghibli or the Quattroporte. Thus the floor pans are different. And obviously, the doors and windows are not the same so those sections of the bodywork are different, too.

        • Thomas

The only thing in common is the rear seat floor, HVAC and eletrical system.

          • Ed Ward

And suspension and body frame and floor pan.

          • Thomas

Incorrect. Diferent floor, very diferent body frame, absolutely different front suspension, slightly different rear suspension too.

  • Gerald Michael

File this under “I’ll believe it when I see it”.

    • Tumbi Mtika

I’d just file under “Sergio’s Bullshit”.

  • Jp

Isn’t the Ghibli already based on the current 300/Challenger/Charger platform? If so, what a Car Scoop! 🙂

  • supermanuel

It strikes me as odd that the the 300C replacement based on the Giorgio platform has been cancelled (for reasons of complexity and cost?) but it is acceptable to use a Maserati ‘platform’ as a base for Dodges. A Maserati platform, if that’s what t truly is, should be more complex and expensively engineered than an Alfa one, surely?

    • Vanquish

Its a platform…not an engine or anything else why would it need to be more complex??? If VW and Bentley can share platforms certainly Alfa Romeo and Maserati can Bentley is far and above Maserati and VW below Alfa….the bottom line is 2021????? The current challenger came out as a 2008 model…..sure its been updated multiple times but comeon were talking nearly 14 years here, and isnt the current Charger a restyled version of the last car. Im sure they were hoping for a buy out…..it just seems like the walking dead here

      • supermanuel

        Walking dead? Absolutely.

      • Six Thousand Times

The Phaeton platform was ludicrously expensive for a VW and the bastard child of Piech’s hubris. Fortunately for the group, somebody saw fit to turn that flop into a Bentley – the luxury car it always should have sat under.

    • Ed Ward

That “Maserati” platform is a modified Chrysler platform.

      • supermanuel

and derived from the very old Merc platform.

  • psiqtas

Are they kidding?! Ghibli is actually based on LX/LC/LA-platform (shortened Quattroporte platform)!

  • LWOAP

That is if FCA doesn’t go into bankruptcy first.

  • Auf Wiedersehen

This should please the $100k+ Ghibli owners

    • europeon

      I’m indifferent.

  • Six Thousand Times

No sense wasting upscale platforms on downmarket Dodge.

    • Ed Ward

If Dodge can command 75,000 for a sedan, its clearly moving upmarket considering people are actually buying those rwd Dodge vehicles.

      • Six Thousand Times

Most Chargers sold are either to fleets (Police cars) or cheaper V-6 versions to old folks. Hellcat sales are hardly a blip. It’s smarter just to let Chrysler and Dodge continue selling whatever they can of a platform that’s paid for until they finally die. FCA should concentrate on Jeep and Ram in the states with Alfa and Maserati for the well-heeled. The only tragedy is that Viper couldn’t be saved as there was still plenty of room for development in that car.

  • karmat

I hope the Charger is a nice 2 door in the style of the ’68 – ’70 model.

    • Eythan Aldrich

      not gonna happen sadly

  • eb110americana

“Dodge axed Grand Caravan last month, as it didn’t comply with safety regulations, but the minivan will return in 2019, with a refreshed design, as will the Durango three-row SUV.”

Did you just make this up? This is literally the first I have heard of any of these. They made a new minivan, it’s called the Pacifica. The old one went out of production because it was OLD. They said many times that only one brand would get to keep their minivan, and it turned out that was Chrysler. I would be very surprised if a Grand Caravan comes out in 2019.

    • Tumbi Mtika

I wouldn’t. Sergio rarely keeps his word.
