Scoop: BMW Testing 2-Series Gran Coupe On Public Roads

What you see here are the very first spy shots of BMW’s upcoming 2-Series Gran Coupe, a new Bavarian four-door sedan to slot underneath the 3-Series.

Rumored to debut in 2020, the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe with the codename F44 is around 4.5 meters long, roughly the same length with the current 2-Series Gran Tourer, aiming to rival models like the next Mercedes CLA.

The new 2-Series Gran Coupe will be front-driven as the rest of the next-gen small BMWs, as turning it into a rear-driven car was deemed too expensive and too close for comfort to the 3-Series. An optional xDrive all-wheel drive system will be offered.

Based on the same underpinnings of the also upcoming 1-Series, the Gran Coupe version of the 2-Series will also share most of its engine options, including petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains with three- and four-cylinders. Sadly, there will be no six-cylinder option this time.

Inside sources indicate that BMW wants to pay tribute to the iconic 2002 design with the next 2-Series, so expect to see an even more differentiated front end design from the 1-Series and a coupe-like roof line in the case of the Gran Coupe version.

As ugly (ok, let’s say “oddly proportioned” for now) as the Mercedes CLA. The FWD side effects…

      too many

If you want to pay tribute to the 2002, you should make it RWD, this was your ace in the whole, the only thing that differentiated yours vs theirs. But the sheeple won’t know the difference anyway

Americans have a low key latent obsession with hatchbacks…they just want them low slung looking or a “SUV”

There is quite a lot of Hyundai i30 liftback in the side view. Plus a Mercedes CLA style oversized front overhang.

    Looks like a Subaru.

    Looks like a BMWbaru.

Keep it in Europe. Looks about as ugly as MB’s CLA and front drive should only be for their little commuter cars, like the SAV’s (X1) and Mini’s. BMW is associated with rear-drive in my mind. No interest in a car like this.

As a BMW fan please learn something about liftback design from audi. little rear door, fat ass, bullshit c pillar and ugly design

FWD is a deal breaker for me, It has been reported the next 2 series Coupe will maintain RWD, no reason this couldn’t.

  • DJ

Yay !!!! another ugly BMW hatch back /suv AND its FWD. way to dilute the brand BMW !

It is the next gen Corolla.

  • I thought it was a mule for the next gen Subaru Legacy at first glance haha
