A Tesla Model X’s driver door has been destroyed after allegedly opening by itself in Sydney, Australia.

Yesterday, the white Model X was parked on the side of a busy road when the front doors opened as a large truck approached. The truck driver was unable to react and smashed through the door, destroying it and almost ripping it from the electric SUV.

Speaking to 9 News, the car’s owner, Sam Kovac said he was in a veterinary clinic at the time of the incident and didn’t have the key on him at the time.

However, Tesla has refuted Kovac’s claims and suggests that he had enabled an optional feature which allowed the front doors to open if the key fob is pressed four times.

In a statement, the automaker said “Our data records clearly show that the customer had this feature set to ‘on’ at the time of the incident.”

Despite Tesla’s claims, Kovac insists that he did not press the key fob to open the doors.
