World’s Greatest Drag Race 7 Has An Obvious Winner

As part of Motor Trend’s annual Best Driver’s Car competition, the publication organizes what it dubs the “world’s greatest drag race.” Now in its seventh year, the race has morphed into an event many patiently wait 12 months to see.

The line-up for this year’s race is one of the best in recent memory. It includes the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, Aston Martin DB11, Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport, Ferrari 488 GTB, Lexus LC500, McLaren 570GT, Mercedes-AMG GT R, Nissan GT-R Nismo, Porsche 718 Cayman S, Porsche 911 Turbo S and a Tesla Model S P100D.

If you’re thinking “why is a Tesla in a best driver’s car competition?” we don’t blame you. It wasn’t. Instead, the competition featured the Mazda MX-5 RF but it was supplemented by the Tesla in the drag race, for obvious reasons.

The race was held at Vandenberg Air Force Base and if you know anything about cars, there’s only a select few cars that have any chance of winning. Namely, the Tesla, the 911 Turbo S, the GT-R, 570GT and 488 GTB.

But which of these will take the crown?

I’m sure the Tesla would win almost every time but I would love to see this same exact race 10 times in a row. Would be nice to see how they do every single race at what the driver errors are.

    • Mill0048

Equally impressive: the Alfa didn’t break! I kid…

      • Shane

Damn near spit my beer out lol!

  • Shane

Also would love to see Tesla vs Demon. Please post if you have it.

  • Bo Hanan

    Hauling “electric ass.”

  • steve

The way that Tesla launched off the line was just Ludicrous!

    • Auf Wiedersehen

Was it? Or was it simply Insane? :p)

  • brn

Didn’t include the Demon, as the obvious winner would be different.

While it wouldn’t have won, I’d have been nice to see the Ford GT in the race too.

  • Banesto Highland

…glaringly, the Tesla was a 4door sedan. The writing is on the wall for ICE.

    • whereismycoffee

Also, by far the heaviest car in the race.

  • kachuks

Next year throw a 720s into the mix.

    • Belthronding Tinuviel

      and it destroys them all.

    • rodriguez256

Hopefully the GT500 will be out as well.

  • Blade t

Not really a big surprise here….

  • SteersUright

You have to admit, even after all this time and also even with it starting to look a bit dated, watching a Tesla at full acceleration next to other exotic, ultra-sleek, sports cars and winning is utterly impressive.

  • SteersUright

That was such an eargasm. Listening to the Ferrari paddle-flick through it gears, the AMG exhaust… Must have been amazing to be there around all those amazing cars.

  • Carmelo Van Cabboi

I don’t know but I’m impressed by the Giulia. I love that beauty

  • Craig

Drag race? And no Demon? [Or even wide-body Hellcat!] Yeah. I know! That said… what this tells you is how INCREDIBLY QUICK and FAST the Dodge Demon is. The Tesla won this race by reaching the 1/4 mile in 10.5 seconds at 125 mph. The car going the fastest at the finish line was the Ferrari 488 GTB. 135.2 mph. Compare those numbers to the Demon numbers. 9.65 @ 140+ mph.

    • Silimarina

Yeah, thanks to those semi slick tyres.Put semi slick’s on that Tesla or 488 GTB and i think it will equal Demon’s numbers or even surpass it

      • Craig

Sure. Slick’s all around. Let’s go for it! Let’s see!

    • Cameron

They’ve tested the demon in real life, couldn’t get close to those numbers.

      • Craig

        ‘They’?

  • mik1211

Since Chevy has the Corvette in this race.. why is the Camero? A Ford Mustang should take the place of the Camero. Porsche is my dream car but it shouldn’t have 2 cars in the race. Replace the 718 with a Bugatti Veyron. Do they have a drag race of the under $20,000 cars?

    • Mike

      camAro<<< with an "a" sheesh

  • Donal Maher

It could do the 1/4 in 4 seconds and still be an uninteresting, soul-less piece of plastic crap.
Yes electricity is part of the future of the car industry and fair play to Tesla for leading the charge (pun intended), but, burning rotten dinosaurs is and always will be a far more pleasurable driving experience.

Backroad blasting in my Subaru, revving the absolute nuts off my old and sadly sold S2000 to the point it sounded like the valves would burst through the bonnet, pounding around a track working the gearbox, heel toe shifting, etc. or, 10 seconds of straight line silent acceleration……..
    I know what I prefer.

  • Shobin Drogan

Shame they didn’t get the 720s this year, I’m willing to bet it would be the fastest of all seeing how it destroyed the model s in another drag race video.

  • An Existing Person

No surprise with the results. I’d love to see a run of all cars on a longer distance runway to see how far the Tesla would eventually get left behind after real speeds.

  • nastinupe

It would have been nice had they actually shown the drag race from start to finish from the same angle.

  • Imagine A Tesla p100d made from carbon fiber !

  • Honda NSX-R

I’m surprised the 488 managed to edge out the 911 Turbo S. I guess the extra power helps.
