Aston Martin chief executive Andy Palmer says the British automaker could follow other carmakers into the Formula E Championship.

Speaking to Automotive News Europe, Palmer said the sport will become very interesting for the brand when the 2018-2019 season starts where drivers will complete a race in a single car rather than having to swap halfway through for a second car.

“We don’t have an electric car yet, but we will have in 2019. You can imagine the two coming together. I love Formula E.

“For me, the use of the two cars reinforces the range anxiety. That will change, and then it starts to get interesting,” Palmer said.

In recent months, Formula E has cemented its position as the number 1 form of motorsport for carmakers looking to develop their electric technologies. Companies including Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche are all planning to or are already competing in the sport.

Aston Martin’s first all-electric vehicle will be a limited-run variant of the Rapide. Just 155 units will be produced and Palmer says the firm will use the car as a learning exercise and ask owners to provide feedback on the vehicle.
