Can The Kia Stinger Take On The All-Aussie Holden Commodore?

The Kia Stinger has sent hearts racing around the world from the moment it was revealed and in Australia, is set to dramatically shake up the industry.

As both the locally-produced Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore are now dead and many manufacturers are turning towards crossovers and SUVs, the Kia Stinger needs to work its way into the hearts and minds of horsepower-loving Australians. Can it do the job?

To find out, Car Advice pitted the twin-turbo V6 variant of the Stinger against the Holden Commodore SS-V Redline, one of the final variants of the all-Aussie Commodore before sales of the re-badged Opel Insignia commence.

Before seeing which of the two is more practical and better to drive on the street, Car Advice conducted a number of performance tests between the two and the results are very, very close.

Which would you pick?

  • Craig

And no doubt – the person testing these cars is FAR more familiar with the Holden than the KIA.

    • Mike Stevens

Well, yeah, we’ve had years to get to know the commodore!

  • john1168

I’ve seen faster times in the Holden/Chevy SS but this test appears to have been done with both cars on the same track, on the same day, under the same conditions, with the same configuration of car (both rear wheel drive as Aussie’s aren’t getting AWD) and as Craig stated, tested by people who have quite a bit of experience with Holdens. I’m stunned that the Stinger did 12.79 in the quarter mile! That’s pretty quick! I was expecting low 13’s but not that!

time to retire commenting in all caps – quite the overuse fad for you, hypocrite.

      • Bash

I dont think he can read or understand what you are saying.

        • exeptor

          Nice one :).

        • no25

I probably should have wrote it in all caps…

          • Bash

            Hilarious !! Hahaha

    • Enter Ranting

The fake grilles in the bumper are on every car sold today, and make no sense on any of them.

  • Shobin Drogan

I like aussie cars but lets be honest the ageing holden is seriously outclassed here. Put the kia up against some real competitors.

    • O123

      Like what?

      • Knotmyrealname

Well the Insignia is the replacement; frankly I was astounded they compared that dinosaur to the Kia.

        • Cupboi

But the Insignia is FWD, and it doesn’t even pretend to have the sporting credentials the current Commodore has. It would be kinda pointless to compare it against the Kia.

          • Knotmyrealname

The Holden Insignia V6 will be all-wheel drive.

          • Cupboi

A FWD-based all-wheel drive sedan with a heavy engine at the front built by a company that is synonimous with understeer? Boy, if this isn’t the perfect recipe for fun, i don’t what is O.o

          • Knotmyrealname

I don’t get your replies as they don’t relate to your previous ones. You seem incapable of maintaining a normal conversation flow.

          • Cupboi

Just saying how this is nonsense. Wouldn’t the Insignia compete with the Optima? Again, you’re the one not making much sense here.

      • Shobin Drogan

A5 sportback and 4 series gran coupe are its main competitors.

Just because you can’t drive for sht, wheres the proper proof?others nailed 12.7 flat on a ss,the tunability of the commodore is far more affording than just the odd spewcial tweaked prototype for the fools to comprehend, you don’t build world leading 4 door saloon cars just for some demented moron to assume ot a joke!
i like to see how well the faddy kia can cope towing real mans commodity like boat, caravan, trailers and on over the outback outclassed?
      get ye hand off it!

      • Shobin Drogan

Triggered much? World leading 4 door sedan? Lol Is that why Holden is dead and absolutely nobody bought the Chevy ss? The commodores interior is worse than a 2017 fiesta. Also whothef in this segment tows trailers with these cars? Thats like 0.1% of the market share. Get out of your country for once and you’ll see there’s more to cars than towin’ and quarter mile times and effin your sister in the back seat.

The testers cannot test without the proper wheel alignment, tyre pressures, optional brake compounds and precise timing of gear changes, kia obviously had theirs tweaked, come in time you’ll see exactly what i mean, irrespective the commodore is race track dna and much stronger + robust car overall to say the very least!never mind the paid whims!

  • SteersUright

Why didn’t they us a RWD Stinger which would be much better matched?

    • It is. The Stinger is only available in rear-wheel drive in Australia.

      • SteersUright

Wait what??? He specifically says, “this Stinger gets off the line better with its all wheel drive”, didn’t he?

        • I don’t think I ever said that! Hah, play it again.

  • SteersUright

The Stinger already looks old to me, not a great design. I saw one in a showroom the other night. Its nice, but looks like its already been out for a few years and in need of a refresh already.
