GM Appears To Have An Electric Coupe In The Pipeline

It appears as if General Motors is working on an all-electric two-door sports car to launch by the year 2023.

Last week, the American automaker released a teaser image previewing some of the 20 battery-electric cars it will release by 2023. GM Authority noticed that this teaser showed a low-slung two-door covered by a sheet, indicating that not all of GM’s EVs will cater for the masses.

It is difficult to ascertain specific design features about the coupe but it appears to have a relatively short wheelbase, a long hood, a low roof, bulging wheel arches, a sharkfin antenna and a prominent rear spoiler.

It is possible that the car depicted is an electrified version of the Chevrolet Camaro but to our eyes, it looks slightly smaller than the muscle car and could even be something that’s set to receive a Cadillac badge.

Whatever GM has in store, it is obvious that it won’t completely eliminate enthusiast-oriented cars as part of its EV expansion.

Or more likely not to look forward to…
Unfortunately there is nothing really special about electric cars. Part of what made cars special was the engine. Take away that and you are just left with an appliance, no matter how fast or good looking they are.

        • LeStori

          Still just an electric appliance…

All cars are just consumer products. Your car is just disposable consumer good.

I’ve driven EV’s for years now and I laugh anytime I hear a struggle engine trying to keep up with me. And I am only 23.

You see how are opinions are different? I actually own and drive an EV and You do not.

Therefore your opinion is invalid because you have a bias on something you dont even own nor drive. Driving a Tesla changes your life.

        • Bash

Sure Tesla is one of the great things in the automotive industry that happen in decades. but hey that doesn’t mean its the best or the greatest. the best is yet to come.
Think of it as those early laptops that before them everybody was using -whatever the hell they were using- they were great, but technology is getting better over time, and you’ll see that in few years, and other companies will sure make cars better than Tesla. now those coming products will change your life.
          Besides, you need to chill.

        • LeStori

I have driven Electric vehicles. My first in the 1970s when EVs were not exactly common. Of course I do not own an EV. They are not exactly fit for my requirements. I do not own an SUV and I also do not own a sedan. But I have had numerous coupes over the years.

As for struggle engine. After we have both driven 300 + miles non stop at 70 plus mph then we will see who has the struggle engine. Oops I think you have ‘broken down’.

But in reality it is all off topic. My comment was about coupes and whether there is any point in having one that is a EV. Absolute performance is not exactly why most buy a coupe.

Great to see that GM has the sports car person in mind in regards to Electric Vehicles.
If I had shares in Tesla, I would be selling them quick smart.
Everyone is doing something with Electric Vehicles.
Tesla will be no different to any off the other manufacturers.
The Model S was a great start and a very fine looking sedan, and the X is okay, but the Model 3 appears to be nothing special.

    Camaro ?

    Interesting hood/roof lines.

Looks like the designer of the BRZ has moved over to GM…

    • Mill0048

I’m getting a late-70’s fastback vibe from it. I like it so far.

  • Socarboy

Remember how the ELR worked out for Caddy, apparently Cadillac doesn’t

    • ediotsavant

That ELR was an ugly piece of shit!T.

      • Status

The ELR most certainly wasn’t ugly. It’s appearance wasn’t what kept it from selling.

  • Spyderdrifter

    Definitely doesn’t have a Camaro silhouette…

  • Auf Wiedersehen

They will revive the Cavalier Z24, it will have 80 miles of range, the full on GM interior treatment and they’ll charge $97,000 for it.

  • Steve Cohn

    Here we go again.
Looks like GM is getting ready to make the same mistake as when they introduced the Cadillac ELR with a disastrous business plan. They should put their money & effort on producing an exciting SUV instead of a “halo” car that will not make waves and sell in trivial amounts. I imagine this sports car will be priced at levels equaling the M Benz GT …$160,000. Sell your GM stock now.

Cadillac already tried to sell an electric coupe.

Electrified or not, juist build the Avista.

  • Livethedream

Gotta hand it to Ford. Nice job sneaking in a Mustang.
