Mazda’s Bringing Two New Concepts To Tokyo

The Tokyo Motor Show is coming up, and Mazda’s not about to sit it out and let its competitors grab all the attention.

The Zoom-Zoom brand has announced plans to showcase not one, but two new concept cars at the Japanese expo, and is previewing both of them with these teaser images.

Pictured above is a design study, described as “a more profound expression of the globally acclaimed KODO design language” that the automaker employs across its range. That’s about the extent of the details Mazda has released at this point, but it’s clear we’re looking at a rather sleek and rakish four-door – one which might point the way, we’d venture, towards a new RX-8.

Alongside it, the automaker will unveil a production-preview concept that appears to foreshadow the next Mazda3. It’s described as “a compact hatchback that fuses next-generation technology and design,” and is powered by the Skyactiv-X compression-ignition gasoline engine that’s slated to emerge as the next propulsion innovation to come from Mazda’s famously innovative powertrain engineering department.

“Our stand this year marks the beginning of a new era for Mazda,” said CEO Masamichi Kogai. “We will showcase a concept with the design and technologies that will define a whole new generation of Mazda cars.”

The new CX-8 will also be on display, together with a special-edition MX-5 Red Top (with a deep cherry red roof and auburn leather interior) and a Mazda2 Noble Crimson edition.

They don’t look like an RX of any kind… 🙁

      Four door RX-Vision?

That’s carscoops guess ‘That’s about the extent of the details Mazda has released at this point, but it’s clear we’re looking at a rather sleek and rakish four-door – one which might point the way, we’d venture, towards a new RX-8.’

Mazda makes some of the best looking cars out today. I love how they are devoid of grilles, slats and holes everywhere.

So far so good, I hope Mazda has improved it’s infotainment system and introduces a larger screen. The company seems tty o be headed into the area that Buick, Acura, and Lincoln are sitting–entry level premium. If the link up with Toyota brings anything to Mazda it should probably access the new 8AT, unless they have a new of their own to connect to the engines.

The Mazda3 concept looks promising! De Design concept is probably a bit like the Shinari concept; details and design are what we will see on future models but no concept for a production car like a new RX-8 or Mazda6. Good to see that Mazda’s will looks sleaker and cleaner

Concept for Mazda 6 and Mazda 3?

    • Jason Miller

      That’s my guess.

    • Giziclown

      For sure.

  • Jason Miller

I’d bet that’s a preview of the new 6. Doubt they would get us all riled up with the RX-Vision concept and then give us a 4-door similar to the RX-8.

  • leviathansh

I’m really hoping to see the new Mazda 3 and 6 model design.

  • KenjiK

    Incoming sexyness.

  • Cupboi

It is interesting how elusive they seem to be about this four-door concept. In the press release, the hatchback is mentioned as a “Next-generation product concept”, obviously previewing the next 3, but the sedan is referred as a “Next-generation design vision model”. Considering the very RWD-esque proportions, i don’t think this is a preview for the next Mazda 6, like many are speculating in the comments. Probably it’s another pie-in-the-sky concept (like the Shinari), with some design cues meant to tricke down to their lineup in the next years.

MAzda could revive the 929 which is a RWD sedan.

      • Cupboi

Now why would they do that? The market is not really begging for big RWD saloons lately.

  • Dennis Scipio

    It’s okay, I guess.

  • SteersUright

Thats a beautiful shape, love how it flares out towards the rear fender!

  • Jweisberg

    929 successor?
