New Mazda RX Sports Car Won’t Launch By 2020

For many months, it’s been assumed that Mazda would celebrate its centenary in 2020 by releasing a new rotary-powered sports car. That’s not going to happen.

During a press conference with journalists at the Tokyo Motor Show, Mazda senior managing executive officer and R&D chief Kiyoshi Fujiwara said the company simply won’t have the money to launch such a car by 2020.

“We cannot provide the RX-VISION to the market by 2020, because we do not have enough money to invest, to commercialize it,” he said to Motoring.

However, you shouldn’t lose all hope just yet.

Mazda’s managing executive officer in charge of the company’s Technical Research Center, Mitsuo Hitomi, revealed that work continues on a new rotary engine, separate from the range-extender EV arriving in 2019.

“If we achieve success [with SKYACTIV-X] probably we can have money enough to invest in the next challenge, then we can judge to go ahead. It’s going to be too late to make the RX-Vision for the centennial.

“But we have still been developing rotary engines as a sports car. Technology is going well but if we launch this kind of model later, we will have to add more technology to it, like autonomous driving, electrification,” Hitomi said.

Interestingly, Hitomi said that the brand’s next rotary sports car could be sold in certain markets without electrification while other cities and countries could be offered a hybrid variant.

Current OEMs seem to be full of car enthusiasts desperate to produce something exciting, but instead resigned to churn out disposable dull cars for the masses… sad

    Wow… I’m so surprised… not!!!

If we had a hydrogen infrastructure, the rotary could live and thrive, but emissions will always plague this engine. I’m a rotary nut and I don’t believe we’ll ever see another gasoline powered version in the future 🙁

  • THIS IS A DESIGN EXERCISE. WHY WOULD ANYONE THINK MAZDA WOULD BUILD A CAR WITH MERCEDES-McLAREN SLR PROPORTIONS?
    IT’S NOT WHAT THEY DO.

  • SteersUright

Nonsense, many a smaller firm produced exciting halo cars. Mazda is risk averse and not a boldly managed company, lets call it what it really is. Thats why they won’t even gamble on exciting powertrains for their existing lineup, much less an all new gorgeous sports car. Shame, this from the same company that once produced the still beautiful 5th gen RX-7.

Ok, then how about some Mazdaspeed models then?

    Come on now, Mazdaspeed 3

Your cars are beautiful but now it’s time to make them go fast.

    What´s??

  • eb110americana

Just take the Miata/MX-5 platform and throw a fastback roof over it, more width for decent tires under the new skin, and turbocharge whatever 4 cylinder engine Mazda still makes. If the Wankel faithful complain, drill a weep hole in their gas tanks and put stickers in their manuals for engine rebuilds every 60K–that should keep them busy for a while.
