Polestar 1 Was Going To Be A Volvo Coupe

The all-new Polestar 1 coupe was originally going to be branded as a Volvo, the Swedish company has confirmed.

At the global launch of the car, Polestar boss Thomas Ingenlath revealed to Motor Authority that Volvo planned on launching the car as a two-door variant of the S90, potentially dubbed the C90.

However, Volvo chief executive Håkan Samuelsson approached Ingenlath two years ago about bringing the Volvo Concept Coupe to the market as a standalone Polestar model.

Despite his reluctance, Polestar began developing the vehicle by overhauling the T8 Twin Engine and through the extensive use of carbon fiber. Upon driving a prototype, Ingenlath said he was convinced the vehicle could wear a Polestar badge.

Interestingly, the Polestar 1 will only be available to customers through a 2- or 3-year subscription service. Production is expected to commence in mid-2019 at a production facility in Chengdu, China.

  • RDS Alphard

So, you don’t actually owned the car? You just “borrowed” it like a rental?

    • KareKakk

I wonder what will happen with those two or three year old models after they have been returned to Polestar: will they be sold as used cars, leased out again as used cars and lower rates/fewer benefits or just scrapped? It seems Volvos half-brother Lynk&Co will use the same kind of subscription deal, but no one seems to know what happens with the cars at the end of the lease.

      • RDS Alphard

I’d want to know about that too!

    • WTF

      or like a Lease……..

      • RDS Alphard

Oh, so that’s the correct term?

I never experience lease a car from our country but I remember people in the state talked about it… we have to buy the car unless you get one from rental company.

  • Christian

    its a brown suit!

    • Bash

      Its Kakki.

      • Mynameis Taylor

khaki? no way. it’s yellow, gold, mustard,… in that family. lol ( Khaki is in the green family

        • Bash

Khaki is not in the green family! khaki is a shade of beige, which by it self is part of the brown family! lol
now we are over talking this.
          Thank you @disqus_04hrP6J3Du:disqus 🙂

          • Mynameis Taylor

you’re right. I actually didn’t mean to say green. I was thinking of that beige-taupe color.

        • TheHake

It’s shumpkin. Somewhere between shit and pumpkin.
          Or shaki…

      • Vassilis

        Actually, it’s ochre :p

        • Bash

Oh please, smh, you could be right tho. 🙂

        • exeptor

I guess we can check when an online configurator appears. It seems that the suit match the brake calipers.

          • Vassilis

Yeah, very close. The calipers are gold though. Not sure you can describe that suit’s colour as gold.

    • S3XY

Get your eyes checked at your nearest lens crafter. It’s yellow.

    • Liam Paul

are you talking about the guys clothes, lol is this fashionscoops or carscoops

      • KareKakk

Well, all this could be interesting if we only knew every particiant look at this webpage using exactly the same screen! But now; every opinion on the colour/color stated here could be 100% true, since each one may use a screen no one else use. No monitor is equal, and when unexperienced user starts to adjust its parameters, things may go even worse.

  • Bash

    I knew that!

  • Six_Tymes

    love it.

  • StrangerGP

I see they’re chasing Jaguar/Land Rover and want to make their brand more premium than it should be. Just make it an affordable luxury coupe for those not wanting an S90 or a V90 (and allow people to actually own the car ;)).

  • TheBelltower

“…a production facility in Chengdu, China.”

    Yeah, forget it.

    • pjl35

As you hit enter to send that comment on a device that was mostly made in China…

      • TheBelltower

As I hit enter to send a comment on a device that I replace annually and currently has a busted shift key… that was made in China.

    • KareKakk

The S90L is Made in China and available in US and Europe already… regular S90 will also be produced only in CN when V90 demands more production capacity.

  • Gerald Michael

Not sure which is the bigger mistake. Not offering the car as a Volvo or wearing that suit.

    • WTF

lmao agreed. nobody knows who Polestar is and Volvo has alot of momentum right now seems like a nonsense move

      • KareKakk

Those who may be in the market for such a 1/500 sports coupé may very well know who make these. Geely/Volvo may call it Swedespeed Tumbleweed, it doesn’t really matter that much at that price for those few.

It can actually be a positive for some buyers if most people don’t know what it is.

    • S3XY

I’m sure you’d prefer a bland grey blob suit, or maybe generic black.

  • Infinite1

The Ploestar 1 coupe originally a Volvo, you don’t say? It’s not like the headlights didn’t give it away that it’s a Volvo…. Subscription service? Eh, it’s a nice looking car but I’ll pass on that, would rather own the car than borrow it.

  • Auto

What? You can’t buy it? Stop trying to do things differently and just put the car on the market like everyone else does. I had some plans for the future. Here they are, or here they were:

    1. Wait until car goes on sale.
    2. Wait until car depreciates like crazy.
    3. Buy car with it’s depreciated value.
    4. Rip out all the electrics and the powertrain.
    5. Put in a Civic Type R VTEC engine or something crazy like that.

  • Tumbi Mtika

    You don’t say?!?

    F***ing DUH!

  • Tumbi Mtika

    So I can’t buy the car…

Right, this is where I leave…

  • Adilos Nave

I hope Volvo sees this. I’ll happily hand over my money that was originally marked for a new A5 for this, but it has to be a Volvo and not a stupid subscription service. This should come to the States as a C90 with a 5-cylinder turbo. Sell it for $45-50K and suddenly the A5 and 4-series will have some serious competition.

    • Nordschleife

Same here. I was going to just buy another A5 but if this would have been positioned correctly I would have glady given my money to Volvo instead. I guess A5 territory wasn’t premium enough for them. I hope Volvo sees this as well.

  • Dariush

i truly dont get the need of a new brand. Volvo is premium enough to sell big coupes. And since they will have to transition to EV sooner or later and the brand Volvo is strong and has an awesome history, why using the polestar label as a brand!??! I dont get it.

  • Merc1

It is a Volvo! Cut all the marketing bullshit.

  • Cupboi

    Well, no shit…

  • Marty

Yep, we already figured that out. Mostly because we have eyes.

Isn’t this starting to feel as awkward as the last time Volvo tried to make a coupé in an overly complicated business in a completely new factory together with TWR? Remember when Val Kilmer’s The Saint drove a C70, and there weren’t even any cars to sell in the USA?

  • smartacus

That first pic just reveals their total confusion.
What is their actual message being conveyed?
Is it a suit-wearer who doesn’t want to wear one?
Or is it a non-suit wearer who wants to wear one?
They don’t know who they are or what they stand for.
How do they expect the customer to know if they don’t?
He’s obviously not a Wall-Street player, or an NBA baller
or a retiree, or a college kid, or a golfer, or an off-roader,
or a hiker, or a tuner, or a ricer, or a muscle-car owner,
or a homersexual, or a family guy, or even a hipster.

  • Luis Fernando Sierra

And who is the man…? “The Saint”.

  • DUH.

  • benT

    pissed off that it isn’t.
stick a T8 combo in it and give me my Volvo Coupe.

  • it should be… That’s what people wanted (et least to see).
