Toyota Crown Concept Hails Arrival Of 2018 Production Model

Toyota’s Crown Concept has just made its public debut at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show, where visitors can truly get a sense of what to expect from next year’s production car.

According to Toyota, the Crown Concept is about two things, driving performance and connectivity, with the automaker looking to provide customers with an enjoyable drive in a future mobility society.

Like the all-new Camry, the Crown Concept is based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), and has even been tested at the Nurburgring in an attempt to make the handling feel more responsive, while increasing stability over various surfaces.

When you’re not out driving the wheels off your Crown Concept (hypothetically), you can just sit back and enjoy all the connected tech and safety features surrounding you. For example, this car comes with Toyota’s ITS Connect service, which shares information on things like traffic signals and other vehicles – it’s Toyota’s way of trying to reduce traffic congestion.

A production version of the Crown Concept will make its debut next summer, and if the show car’s interior is anything to go by (and it should), potential buyers can look forward to sitting in a surprisingly elegant and well-built cabin.

I like what Toyota has done with the front, the grill design is patterned after a crown.

  • SgtBeavis

The Crown has always been an excellent car. I love riding in them when I visit my inlaws, back in Japan. The Crown Athlete was my favorite version.

I’m hoping that we’ll finally see a Lexus version now that they have a shared architecture with the Camry. The only question I have is whether or not this is still a RWD/AWD vehicle or is it moving to FWD?

    • Mill0048

Looks like it’s still RWD from the placement of the front axle line.

    • Ilbirs

Maybe the concept involved in TNGA name goes beyond the platform itself, as the A stands for “architecture” and can encompass some other shared components that can be standartized for both FWD and RWD models. I’d bet in something like what’s seen in the CMF concept adopted by Renault-Nissan.

  • TrevP

Looks like a Genesis to me.

    • bd

Not really – as the Genesis grille shape is hexagonal.

This is more like Audi’s original oversized grille (before they went hexagonal)..

  • S3XY

    Toyota Genesis.

  • Leconte Dave

    No panoramic sunroof?

  • pcurve

Crown brand is awesome. They should bring it here! Toyota needs a new RWD 4 door sedan to replace Cressida!

  • Bash

    Oh…. that face!

  • gcsma

Looks alot like a 16 Sonata Hybrid

  • Tony J

Such a shame a FWD crown ………I guess that’s the final nail in the coffin for the GS as well

    • Eythan Aldrich

excuse me but don’t jump into conclusions about that yet……the crown is still a rwd car…..

      • WTF

Excuse you?? lol what a pompous idiot and yes youre excused. If it is based on a FWD platform than YES as Tony said it will be FWD…..such ashame so pompous yet no common sense

        • Eythan Aldrich

excuse me but I don’t like being rude here but the crown is been a rwd since 1955 for crying out loud with awd is optional in later generations…..

    • Trades46

Still RWD; you can kind of tell by the axle’s positioning. It is likely the TNGA-L which underpins the new Lexus LS500 judging by the wheelbase, so it is still very much longitudinal engine RWD or AWD.

  • SteersUright

This Concept car already looks old, not a great start.

  • Marty

So … the designer accidentally used the smudge tool on the rendering of the front, and then they built it that way?

  • klowik

The whole body is just too plain, the front grille design just doesn’t match the rest of the body.

  • Oh Toyota, haven’t you learned from other automakers’ failure of implementing dual infotainment screens?

    • Thando_Gqabaza

Have dual screens in my Accord – love it. Can view certain info on top while on a conf call with phone controls at the bottom , for example

      • Glad to know you’re finding the dual screen set-up intuitive 🙂

  • exeptor

A little bit of the current S class in the front, a little bit current Volvo cars in the central console.

  • Shams Tabrez

This is pretty much exact duplication of the current generation 2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.

  • This is a concept??

  • Mynameis Taylor

this is a good looking car. I like it. However, there is something up with the proportions. I feel the wheels are too small for the body. the body looks fat.

  • Mynameis Taylor

This is the Grill that Lexus should have had

  • Harry_Wild

Never come to the states anyways!

  • Althea Later

I like how everyone is staring at it and taking photos. Like it’s something special. Looks like a cut and paste of every Asian car that’s been produced for the last 5 years.
