Toyota Thinks Hydrogen Will Reach Cost Parity With Hybrids By 2025

Toyota believes hydrogen-powered vehicles could become as affordable as hybrids by 2025.

While speaking at the Tokyo Motor Show, officials from the Japanese carmaker said that hydrogen fuel technologies are set to get much cheaper to produce and will prove more efficient in the coming years. Additionally, Toyota believes sales of hydrogen vehicles will rise sharply, despite the threat posed by electric vehicles.

Speaking to Autocar, general manager of new business planning for Toyota, Naomichi Hata said that hydrogen and hybrid vehicles will cost customers about the same.

“In the early 2020s we will launch the next generation hydrogen fuel stack technology, and that will provide a substantial move forward.

“Today production of the Mirai is limited to 3000 cars a year, but by 2025 we expect that figure to be ten times higher.

“As a result of these gains we expect – in Japan at least – the same car type to cost the same price whether it is a hybrid or powered by hydrogen,” Hata said.

There is a host of automakers hedging their bets on battery-powered electric vehicles being the future but a selection of carmakers are following Toyota’s lead with developments in hybrid, hydrogen and EV technologies. These include Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Audi.

Just a question, wasn’t BMW who started the Hydrogen powered can with the late 90s 7-series, or what?

little later than that I believe. I still remember reading this about its hydrogen tank and being blown away. “Yet the vacuum-insulated tank felt room temperature to the touch, so well sealed that a block of ice inside would take 13 years to fully melt, BMW engineers say, and a fill-up of coffee would remain hot enough to drink three months later.”

        wow!
        Thanks.

the bmw was a limited poduction between 2005-2007 and did not use fuel cell tech.. it was using hydrogen as a combustible fuel.

one of the first road approved hydrogen fuel cell cars was the honda FCX-V4 available from 2002 – 2007

The Toyota Mirai actually uses electric engine(s) powered by electricity created by hydrogen. The BMW used hydrogen instead of gasoline with an internal combustion engine.

I believe they’re right. Maybe sooner.

I think the main thing holding back the sales of these cars are the looks.
Seriously can’t believe the Mirai made it off the design table!

The Roman Empire, bonfire at its best. It’s amazing it bears striking resemblance to some other projects, say boring underground tunnels for cars. All three were/are preordained to shed at its all glory. When stupidity takes charge this is what happens, all three halted and crushed from within. Hydrogen fuel cell, boring tunnels and the Roman Empire belong to the same crew. Fortunately we have track record of such “feats” so tomorrow we will deal with them no more, ever.
