2019 Subaru Ascent Looks Underwhelming In The Flesh And That’s Probably Great For Sales

The new Subaru Ascent has landed in Los Angeles, ready to pick a fight with the Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, and Chevrolet Traverse, among others.

However, until it proves itself worthy of challenging other three-row SUV across North America, it’s trying to get the attention of potential buyers in this highly-competitive segment with a very civilized (others would say boring) exterior design, and a versatile cabin that can carry up to eight passengers.

You can bash Subaru all you want for its timid design efforts, but you can’t deny that they know what their core audience wants, as proved by their sales momentum with 71 straight months of increased deliveries in the States.

The devil, as they say, is in the details, as where the ill-fated Tribeca failed (space), the new Ascent more than makes up for it. At 196.8in (499.9cm) long, 76in (193cm) wide, and with a wheelbase of 113.8in (289.1cm), this is the largest Subaru ever. It builds upon the Ascent Concept shown this year in New York, which, in turn, is derived from the 2016’s Viziv-7 study, and beneath its new sheet metal lies a modified version of the company’s modular vehicle platform.

By the time it arrives at dealers next summer, American customers will get to choose between one of four trim levels. Each one is well equipped, even the base model, which comes with features such as infotainment system, smartphone connectivity, three-zone automatic climate control, and automatic emergency braking.

However, regardless of their selection, they will have to settle for the 260hp and 277lb-ft (376Nm) of torque 2.4-liter Boxer engine, with twin-scroll turbo and a CVT.

Nice look, great appearance and those emotions. I take all the dogs!

  • Mark S

It looks Great! Much better than the Mini-Van pilot.

It looks like Subaru is rushing to get a 3-row crossover into the market and did not put much effort into designing the car. The interior shares too many elements with the entry-level Impreza, but the Ascent is Subaru’s top vehicle. But ehhh, this thing is gonna sell a lot anyway.

    • xDRAN0x

its loaded with options too, that will help

  • pxsupply

    360 horses?

Ahhh, fix it! That should say 260hp and 277lb-ft!

I was really hoping for a hybrid powerplant from Subaru with this, but this just seems like another SUV that will further increase how bloated the 7 row SUV market is. Sigh … thx for the effort Subaru!

    • eb110americana

Yeah, those numbers sounded way off for a 2.4L turbo-4.

    • JohnCarscoop

We wish it had 360! Obviously a typo that’s been amended

  • jsz00

Perfect for a millennial soccer mom

  • Nice interior…too bad about the exterior…

  • RDS Alphard

    Surprisingly still no engine shot

  • SteersUright

Subaru = practical. This here? This looks practical.

  • HaltestelleLuitpolthafen

It looks extremely boring and probably is underwhelming. CVT transmission? Junk.

I’m sure they will sell tons regardless.

  • DM

I really want to like it since I’m a Subaru guy, but oh my.. looks like an XL Outback and a mix of Highlander, and Pilot. Still im sure it will sell like crazy…

  • RV

it somehow looks like a Kia Borrego
