Alfa Romeo’s Officially Returning To F1 With Sauber

It’s official, ladies and gents: Alfa Romeo is returning to Formula One, and it’s doing so in partnership with Sauber.

The multi-year technical and commercial agreement will see the Swiss outfit run as the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team, starting this coming season, and bear the colors and logo of the storied Italian marque.

“The Alfa Romeo engineers and technicians, who have already demonstrated their capabilities with the newly-launched models, Giulia and Stelvio, will have the opportunity to make that experience available to the Sauber F1 Team,” noted FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne. “At the same time, Alfa Romeo fans will once again have the opportunity to support an automaker that is determined to begin writing an exciting new chapter in its unique, legendary sporting history.”

This will not, of course, be the first time that Alfa Romeo will compete in grand prix racing. The marque dominated pre-war racing, and returned in the 1950s to win back-to-back world championships. It stepped back into an engine-supplier role in the 1960s and 70s, then returned as a full-on constructor during the 1980s, but bowed out again in 1985. This will mark the first time we’ll see Alfa Romeo represented on the grid since then, following an absence of over 30 years.

The deal will see the team running Ferrari engines and give the two companies the opportunity for further collaboration away from the race track as well, though what form that might take, at this point we don’t know.

Sauber enjoyed a similar relationship with BMW in the previous decade before the German automaker pulled out of the sport (along with Toyota and Honda). But the team has a much longer history with Ferrari, running its engines fro 1997 through 2005 (rebranded by Malaysian oil company Petronas) and returning to Ferrari power from 2010 through today.

“Working closely with a car manufacturer is a great opportunity for the Sauber Group to further develop its technology and engineering projects,” said Sauber chairman Pascal Picci. “We are confident that together we can bring the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team great success, and look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

This is the clever way to ricover credits for engines and technology supplied, to help Sauber finances, to help young Ferrari drivers and to improve Alfa Romeo image and corporale pride.
Also Ferrari need allied teams, to counterbalance politic influence of all england based teams.
Hoping Sauber will be on top five teams, we could dream…
Well done Sergio, the best !!!

Not sure this will do much for Alfa Romeo. Unless the new team is a genuine top runner beating all but Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull and with a definite chance at the podium on occasion it may be counter productive. Alfa Romeo was once a top F1 team. It would not be nice seeing it running at the rear…

In 2017 Sauber finished 10 out of 10. Wooden spoon territory. I realise it was running one year old Ferrari engines but McLaren with poorly performing Honda engines finished 9th with 30 points over Sauber’s 9.

When Mercedes bought Brawn F1 team, Brawn just was F1 champion.
One year later the same team branded Mercedes had big problems to be competitive ….
Mercedes employed Schumaker but they was no winners.
Mercedes needed big helps by Pirelli to set performant suspensions end big helps by FIA and FOCA to change rules and became the dominant winner we Know today.
Alfa Romeo has the right to try and need time like Mercedes to became competitive.
