BMW i Vision Dynamics Concept Visits Tesla Model 3 County

By bringing the i Vision Dynamics concept to the 2017 LA Auto Show, BMW has given Tesla engineers a chance to take a closer look at a potential Model 3 rival.

Even though BMW has yet to officially confirm the production version of the i Vision Dynamics, it’s safe to say they have no choice but to throw their hat in the ring and offer a mass-production 4-door EV of their own.

What they have said about this concept is that it could accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in under four seconds, hit a top speed of over 124 mph (200 km/h) and offer a range of 373 miles (600 km).

Compare it to the Tesla Model 3 and despite these numbers being preliminary, you’d be hard pressed to call it inferior. Aesthetically though, you could make a case for the i Vision Dynamics looking, well, more dynamic than the Model 3 – but again, we’ll have to see how the concept’s design will evolve once it’s ready for production.

Overall, we hope to see this car on the road as soon as possible, if only to admire its slim LED headlights, faux yet imposing grille, and three-dimensional taillights.

Do we honestly think this will compete with the Model 3? I highly doubt it.

I like BMW, but really, look at all the previous BMW concepts, and if history is anything to go by, the production model will look nothing like this.

This isn’t a rival, but more like a hope and a dream. Offer a range of 373 miles? HAHA. The all-electric 3-Series will have under 250 mile range, and is likely to be released as a 2019 model… And BMW plans to release 12 all-electric cars by 2025? Good luck with that. Besides, what happened to calling this the i5 too? As long as ICE is still around, BMW’s EV technology will be the “muddling through” strategy, similar to their peers, as they are more focused on reworking existing models to add batteries and electric motors. BMW’s CFO, Nicholas Peter, admitted it himself in July by saying, “For a company that is accustomed to profit margins of between 8% and 10% on its cars, adjusting to life in a world of electric cars is painful. Profitability on electric cars is definitely challenging.” This also after BMW recently spent $6 billion on electric car R&D.

Honestly, please. I have an i3 that barely achieves 70 miles. The newly updated i8 achieves a measly 33 miles of range. The charging network is lousy and unreliable and many BMW service centers don’t have parts readily available to fix simple issues. Why should we expect that this company, in 2020, will have a Tesla competitor that will smooth-out all of those issues? I love my i3, but it’s a novelty. It was the gateway drug that convinced me to get my Model X. All of the conventional automakers are just talking. They’ve been talking for decades. The time for talk is over. Not interested in BS concepts.

Woof! What a tortured mess. It has Kia’s “tiger nose” grille as the side windows!

  • Zandit75

I love this! It’s the best proportioned Beemer we’ve seen in years.
It’s much closer to production than it’s earlier iteration.

Every bit as crappy looking as Tesla.
