McLaren 720S Vs 800 HP Dodge Viper ACR: Who’s The Boss?

One would think that a Dodge Viper ACR would be enough to tackle the new McLaren 720S – especially a tuned example like this one.

This particular ACR has new heads, cam, and a custom exhaust, which allow the 8.4-liter naturally aspirated V10 to make approximately 800 horsepower at the crank, or some 155 HP more than the stock one, which is good for 645 HP and 600lb-ft (813Nm) of torque.

Despite having a smaller 4.0-liter V8 engine (albeit with two turbos strapped to it) delivering 710hp and 568lb-ft of torque to the wheels, the McLaren 720S incredibly fast. Compared to its US-bred contender, the British supercar has some advantages, such as a dual-clutch gearbox instead of a manual stick shift, clever aerodynamics and less weight.

Now, we already know that the 720S is capable of beating some very serious machines on the drag strip, and the Viper ACR has recently ended up on its list, but how fast is it compared to this 800 HP example? DragTimes have put together a video that shows the two exotics going head-to-head in a few roll races, so click on the “play” button and find out who comes out on top.

might as well just say Old vs New. and, he apparently doesn’t know everything about “aero”. The track wing on the ACR slows it down considerably in a drag race. The raccoon is fast, slippery and light. No surprise winner here.

    • carsmofo

I was hoping for a proper lap time battle. :-/

    • brn

ACR costs half as much, is a lot older, isn’t a straight-line car. Why should we expect it to win? The video is nothing more than someone trying to justify to himself that his $330,000 toy somehow makes sense.

Also, STOP RACING ON PUBLIC ROADS!

    • Knotmyrealname

I dare say the ‘track’ Viper would get completely whipped up against the 720S on said track. It’s no competition in a straight line and I reckon it’d be even more embarrassed when the Viper has to turn the wheel off the straight ahead position. Note: I am talking about off-the-shelf products, not race prepared items. I know the Viper used to compete in the GT series.

      • Michael Borisenko

WTF, “the viper will get completely whipped”? The viper ACR holds 8 production car track records in the U.S., it beat the Porsche 918, the laFerarri, and the McLaren P1. The P1 has 900+ how and $1,000,000+. This 720S stands no chance.

And the Viper goes out with a whimper, further solidifying it’s place in history as a fossilized relic of the 1990’s with engineering from the 1890’s.

    • willhaven

And still one of the best bangs for your buck in history.

    • Michael Borisenko

Tell that to the Porsche 918, and the McLaren P1 that have cutting edge tech. The viper ACR beat them around 7 tracks in the U.S. relic indeed…

  • Bash

Torn between what my heart love and what my mind think…
    Damn that Viper is gorgeous!!

  • SteersUright

Wow! I’ve never seen an ACR Viper look that slow, and its an incredible fast car. Seems to win off the line and then hit a wall at speed, likely aero Im guessing. Either way, these McLaren’s, dumb as they look, are fast as all hell!
