Mid-Engine Corvette C8 To Offer 850HP From Twin-Turbo V8, Leaked Doc Claims

More information on the upcoming Corvette C8 has been leaked, including the engine range which apparently will feature three options to choose from.

According to a market analyst document from IHS Markit which was leaked by a Corvette Forum user, the new Corvette C8 will come with two new DOHC V8 options, as well as the existing 6.2-liter V8. Of the two new engines, the smaller will be a 4.2-liter and the other will be a 5.5-liter unit.

The new engines will be built at the Tonawanda plant and according to IHS Markit, the existing 6.2-liter V8 will be the main choice for the C8 with an average of 14,000 engines per year, from 2019 to 2021. The smaller 4.2-liter follows on their list with a projected production run of more than 7,000 engines per year, with the 5.5-liter having the smallest production numbers, at around 5,000 units per year.

Both the 4.2-liter and the 5.5-liter V8s are expected to be twin-turbocharged, with the leaked document also mentioning a “Cadillac Sports Car” which is going to use the smaller of the two engines. As for the actual power figures, the 5.5-liter V8 is expected to produce as much as 850hp and 720lb-ft of torque, which sounds exciting to say the least.

The same document says that the current C7 Corvette will soldier on for at least three more years to 2021, which means the two cars will be available at the same time.

Love the back, front looks kinda odd imo.

    • :/ Yurr

Yea the back is nice, the front lights should be more sharper to match the back.

interesting info. I know its coming, but ill believe it when i see it. a mid engine was planned before many years ago, and halted twice. “just saying”

relax, those are fake renderings , not worth commenting on… I like the 6.2 in my 17 Grand Sport a lot.. are the 4.2 and 5.5 the DOHC engines? I want a high revving NA v8 (maybe 550-600hp) mid engine with a manual trans please 🙂

    • RDS Alphard

Yeah, the 4.2L & 5.5L will be DOHC.

  • Kagan

    overkill, 4,2, 5,5 and 6,2 litres engines?

    • Matt

From how I read the document the way they identified the c8 mid engine vs the c7 being “corvette y1″(c7)”corvette y2″(c8). The 6.2 is going to carry on in the c7 & the mid engine will have the 2 dohc choices. This also lines up with the years & production numbers in the doc.
Having the c7 there a few more years as they bring in the mid engine c8. I’m thinking the c7 will be priced lower than it’s now ~$45-$50k, while the 4.2 c8 will be (hopefully) just a few grand more than the current base c7…~$59k Finally the 5.5 c8 priced a little higher over the current z06.

Wasn’t having too many options what killed many GM products in the past? Interesting rendering but I learned long ago not to get too excited over renderings or concepts.

Wasn’t it lack of options that killed the SS?

      • s3xyScorp .

No it was lack of availability,GM never even sold it in Canada,,30 milion potential customers mean nothing to them,I guess..

850HP?!?!? SWEEEET!!! If they’re gonna keep the C7 going, I have a feeling that will have the 6.2 and the C8 will have the 4.2 and the 5.5. My questions are, what transmissions will be in the C8? Obviously the 10 speed auto but if not, could there be a dual clutch in the works? A manual maybe? The 8 speed auto and 7 speed manual will no doubt continue in the C7. Also, will AWD be an option in the C8?

IF it will cost like promissed ,it will be the end of the legend Ford GT!!!

    • Karl

The Ford GT is a pure race car transformed into a every day car.

Hope it doesn’t look like those generic video game sports car renderings.

  • I think that is way cool. I hope they continue with both the front engine and mid-engine. The front would retain the name Corvette and the mid-engine get the Sting Ray name.
