Tesla Shocks Us With New 2020 Roadster, Does 0-60 In 1.9 Sec!

Tesla has used the unveiling of its long-awaited Semi to shock the world and unveil the second-generation Roadster, a car which will be the sportiest vehicle ever created by the electric automaker.

Elon Musk has been promising a new Roadster for a number of years and has just announced that it has arrived. Like the original, it is a sleek two-door but unlike its predecessor, is totally bespoke and adopts a seriously sexy design.

Incredibly, the base second-generation Tesla Roadster will reportedly reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 1.9 seconds and reach 100 mph (160 km/h) in a mere 4.2 seconds. What’s more, it will run down the quarter mile in 8.9 seconds thanks to a 200-kWh battery pack and apparently hit over 250 mph.

According to Musk, the new Tesla Roadster has a 620-mile range and despite what the images may suggest, it does have four seats, however, the rear seats are exceptionally small.

From a design standpoint, the new Roadster is a dramatic departure from any other Tesla before it. The front end is characterized by a pair of slim LED headlights and typical Tesla curved body panels, while the rear looks more like a radical concept car than anything remotely close to a production model. Among the most intriguing design elements are wafer-thin taillights and an aggressive diffuser.

During his speech announcing the second-generation Tesla Roadster, Musk said he wants it to serve as the final nail in the coffin for ICE vehicles, hence why such lofty performance targets have been set. If they’re all achieved, it could very well represent the future of performance cars.

Unsurprisingly, the second-gen Tesla Roadster will be more expensive than its predecessor. In fact, the base price will start at $200,000 with a $50,000 reservation required. For true die-hard Tesla enthusiasts, a Roadster Founders Series will be available, starting at $250,000.

The front looks like a Porsche. Otherwise, I like what im seeing so far.

    • First Last

I was just about to say that. Almost like 918-style concept art vibes.

      • Moveon Libtards

        Copycat car company you say?

Dont worry, they wont be able to produce it for another 10 years. Model 3, anyone?

    • S3XY

Just because it has a rounded front end. Lol. No

      • Tumbi Mtika

That’s what we call, a compliment.

        • S3XY

The front end looks like an RX8 because the guy who designed it (Franz Von Houlzhausen) designed the RX8.

          • OG

LOL,you’re full of crap. The Roadster front end doesn’t look like the RX8 at all and then there’s the fact that Franz Von Houlzhausen began working for Mazda in 2005.The RX8 was released in 2003.Then there’s the facelifted RX8 that was done while he was Design Director at Mazda, but it doesn’t look any different than the OG RX8

          • Axiom Ethos

Regardless of whether Franz worked on it or not, I too saw the RX8 resemblance before even scrolling down to the comments. It’s pretty easy to see the similarities with the sharp wheel arch contours, hood line placement and angles, the headlamp rounded outer curves and pointing towards the center. It’s naturally different but there are definitely shared elements, if that’s something you can comprehend.

        • Moveon Libtards

          If you swing that way…

    • R55

You have confused Porsche with Lykan Hypersport.

  • Six Thousand Times

If it really does what Musk says it can and they can sort out the usual Tesla gremlins…wow, I’d have one of these.

  • Dennis Scipio

That’s a very sleek looking roadster.

  • C172fccc

I’m more shocked about the wiper on one of their prototypes. It almost look like it comes from the semi-truck.

    • Status

You’d be surprised just how much part sharing is done in the auto industry.

    • lol, this is awful

    • That’s more like an afterthought..

  • Tumbi Mtika

I guess the new Cayman’s design is gonna have to be reworked. A lot.

  • Erzhik

If they really do manage to hit 1.9 on a base model, the auto industry will bow down to Musk.

    • S3XY

They already have on that prototype. Will probably be a millisecond quicker come 2020

    • Tumbi Mtika

I welcome our new electric overlords.

  • TheBelltower

Speed has become the equivalent of flipping on a light switch. It will be absolutely mind blowing to drive this thing.

  • Six_Tymes

Nice. amazing that he was able to make it a surprise.

  • Mark S

It looks nothing like a Porsche! It is Boring in fact, like a 90’s clay model. Tesla Best deliver on the Model 3 first and fix their reliability problems before moving on. I wonder how long it will be before they are bankrupt and in the hands of a Chinese company.

    • S3XY

You can go back in your cave now.

      • Mark S

Cave me? I didn’t design a car that looks like a bad 90’s clay model. Who cares about 1.9 seconds 0-60 too, these will be rare because most will be destroyed in accidents. Fact is Tesla is not delivering on the model 3 and is having serious issues across the line. They need to fix that before they move on.

    • Belthronding Tinuviel

You should be careful with your statement against Tesla. There are some Tesla fanboys over here and they could point at you and call you CAVEMAN.
You do not have right to criticize Tesla/Musk duo, only compliments accepted.
      We better deal with it.

      • RDS Alphard

        I can see that already.

      • RDS Alphard

Also worth mentioned, any electric vehicle come after this will be copycat, because Elon Musk wake the industry.

        • Belthronding Tinuviel

No problem with Tesla and it’s products, because i just do not buy any of it.
But it is completely true that Tesla woke the industry up in every positive or negative sense,i agree with you.
But being a Tesla fanboy/fangirl is like being Justin Belieber for especially youth,i am not against it or support it,i just do not understand their point. They just make Tesla brand irritative ,at least for me.

          • RDS Alphard

Fanboy make everything worst, Nissan GT-R fanboy is one.

      • fabri99

Well, the fantastic option “block user” will make all his comments disappear and everything will look normal again in the comment section. It really is as good as it sounds.

    • Mynameis Taylor

finally someone with sense. It looks NOTHING like a Porsche.

  • S3XY

This is why I don’t give a sh*t about any other car manufacturers.

    • Shobin Drogan

Just like how apple fans don’t care or know anything about tech.

      • mas921

i would say Tesla “worshippers” really

    • TotallyDisqusted

There is more to cars than straight line speed, although these specs are impressive.

    • Tumbi Mtika

      Don’t be that guy.

  • My first though was its a facelift Ascari KZ1 or the A10

  • SteersUright

Generic styling on amazing tech with the smallest targa top I’ve ever seen. Hope there’s some revisions prior to production, looks half-baked.

  • Sébastien

Looks like a mix of TTS and NSX…
    But I like it.

I wonder how short will be tires’ life…

  • B.Stokes

Did I read that right? 10,000nm of torque? FTW! 😳

  • Oh wow! This is gorgeous! …10 000N.m surely that’ll twist the earth in its axis! ..A spin off of this could make a nice Lotus Elise..

    • TheHake

“A spin off of this could make a nice Lotus Elise..” Bwahahaha. That’s funny!

      • Tumbi Mtika

Everything would come full circle, though.

      • Wanna catch me up?

        • MultiKdizzle

The first-gen Tesla Roadster was based on the Lotus Elise.

          • I know that and my comment was around that exactly, I just don’t get the gag about the Tesla-to-Lotus Idea..

          • MultiKdizzle

            It’s just that, no more.

  • Marty

I’m just happy the touch screen is visually integrated with the dashboard.
The Model 3 is an abomination in that area.

glad they’re no longer heavily based on a lotus.
This can humiliate any fossil fueled hypercars

  • Knotmyrealname

    2 please!!

  • Jds65

2020? I’m sure the Germans are getting to work now.If Tesla can claim these numbers i can only imagine what the Germans can produce if they start solely using electric motors.

    • R55

Shame all German cars have less character than a cardboard box but with a good engine.

Elone musk they destroy the diesel and petrol engine they have lot of best idea

  • RDS Alphard

    Shocking performance.

  • f1300

At last they hired an exterior-designer! Now, continue that way and get another one for the interior and we are talking. I hope that (pretty) thing brakes equally good as it accelerates…

      • f1300

Sorry, I forgot to put sarcasm-tags onto my first comment. In my very personal opinion this Tesla is the first one which qualifies being designed (at least on the outside). Up to now (all imho) Teslas were highly generic, especially interiorwise. I’m glad that they are about to change that.

  • TheHake

It looks really nice, but shouldn’t they focus on stuff they are promising, instead of promising more?

    • Obsequious Lickspittle

True but you have to create interest (and hype).

      • TheHake

I think they have enough going around…

    • Agreed. Honestly, it’s what this and the semi feel like – literal cash grabs. No way will we see this Roadster in at least the next 5 years. I’m all for it, but this will require Tesla to compentently build the Model 3 as well as another factory and dealership network to cope with these two. These reservations come in at a time when Tesla needs the extra money for it’s robotic production increase also. Sounds too suspicious for this to be a legitimate motive.

  • StrangerGP

What do you do when you’re struggling with on time deliveries of the newest model? You announce two more for the near future.

  • fabri99

Impressive. I’m really not a Tesla enthusiast, but this Roadster is very sexy. Performance-wise it seems remarkable (hopefully not as flawed as its predecessor), but the price tag… eh. I’m not sure this thing will be able to compete with Ferraris and McLarens. Performance is there, but Tesla doesn’t really have pedigree and know-how in sports cars. A slower, less-performing $100k car would have made more sense, as an alternative to the 911. High-performance versions could have come later, a $200k price will put off a lot of people.

  • TheHake

    I bet it’s gonna sound great … oh wait…

    • mas921

  • Dennis James

Very nice and congratulations. But I think that in 2021 Tesla will finally have competition. Porsche Mission E would probably be in the same price range, Mercedes could also follow. But nevertheless, the goal of “nail in the coffin” for ICE vehicles would probably be achieved (some time 10 years later).

  • Kagan

Nice but 2020 usually means a lot later!

    • Tumbi Mtika

      It’s practically 2018 already.

      • Kagan

        yes and?

  • Leconte Dave

Might as well release a model S coupe?

    • Tumbi Mtika

      This is it.

      • mas921

then its going to weigh more than a dodge challenger

  • Howstar

Look forward to seeing it in 2023

  • Vassilis

    Damn, nice!

  • Annoyer

    Delivery in 2022

also, I’m seeing a hint of Lykan on the headlight, not that it’s a bad thing tho.

  • BlackRock

Thats too much for Tesla! for $250K, I’d rather get a ferrari or lambo

    • Tumbi Mtika

That Tesla is faster than those cars though, if Elon is correct about those figures.

      • Raf

Yeah but Ferraris and Lambos have more presence IMO and they have actual engines that sound amazing. I just don’t see this roadster having the same emotional appeal no matter how much faster it is. Also the design does not match the price.

        • mas921

      • mas921

no its not “Faster”, 0-60 means nothing for a sports car until you take a corner. the Model S is slower than a mere Ford Focus around a track (Car&Driver last years shoot out). so its not even of a Ferrari or lamborghinis radar, 2 or 3 orders of magnitude lower actually.

        • Tumbi Mtika

Sorry, I did mean quicker. had an ‘idiot’ moment there.

  • Infinite1

Looks good, they finally gave it a bit of a grille instead of a solid front end that looks incomplete

  • ErnieB

Looks great but for $200k I expect my heart to skip a bit at the sound of an angry engine.. not faint from gforces!

  • Bash

Cool, but 1.9,, do I need to get a jet fighter training to be able to tolerate that acceleration, this is crazy.

  • dumblikeyou2

1.9 seconds sounds dangerous. I don’t trust people. People are real stupid.

  • Moveon Libtards

Forget Ludicrous mode, 10 or so Tesla fanboy articles in 24 hours while the company is going down the tubes with all the bad news smacks of desperation.

No wonder these bunch of idiot low IQ bloggers/ clickbait writers lost to President Trump. You would think they were humiliated enough already.

  • OG

As many of you say over here: “It doesn’t look like a $250k car”

  • lagunas3ca

Franz von Holzhausen’s design inspired by the 918 with Weissach package with those aero-blades behind the rear wheel arches.

  • Nick099

Love the idea. The specs sound good.
But let’s face it folks, Tesla has not been able to deliver on its mass market promises.
But we will know shortly…as in 6 months. They are running out of cash.

  • ctk4949

Finally something that can beat the 720s, lol!!

    • mas921

until you you actually turn the steering wheel lol, good luck with it beating a ford focus 1st

  • Auto

The roadster looks fine, but Tesla will probably go bankrupt.

  • Seb Jones

And now the dodge demon is already outdated…that quick

  • Tumbi Mtika

Tesla- Putting Dodge on suicide watch since 2006.

  • Bob

So, Veyron Super Sport has top speed around 265 mph and 1500Nm and set of tires for 42k$ (around). These special tires are making it possible to drive with top speed for 15 minutes, then it’s pretty dangerous becasue they wear out . Tesla Roadster gonna have 250 mph and 10000Nm. With such numbers it’s obvious that it’s gonna need better tires than ususal. So with 250k$ price it’s gonna be pretty expensive to buy a set of better tires for that Tesla. It’s not that bad with veyron when new car cost around 3000000$.

    • mas921

by using the manner they advertise their torque number, the Veryon Super Sport does 17,362.8 nm ! (1500nm x 3:18 1st gear ratio x 4.62 final drive). tells you something about how blatantly twisted the whole tesla marketing is.

  • anonim1979

A roundhouse kick to the head for the exotic segment. Tesla moving in for the arm bar submission.

Somebody render a ragtop version. Not that the design lends itself to that…but just curious.

  • Raf

The design looks good but there so many other cars I’d rather have in this price range. It may be faster than all the cars I’m thinking of but speed wouldn’t be a top priority considering all cars in that bracket are ridiculously fast. Most of other cars in this category have something the Tesla doesn’t; unique sounding engines and prestige. I do wish Tesla luck.

  • like

  • mas921

Meh, don’t care if does 0-60 in 1.9 or even a warp drive, its just another castrated emotionless vehicle (EV),

  • Trackhacker

99% of drivers will crash these things. Being able to take off that fast…this won’t end well.

  • TriiGun

    Lame design and lame wheels.

  • Nick099

The entire purchase price up front…on a not-yet-in-production car by a company that has a spotty rep for delivering on quality and volume????

Has it entered any of the Tesla fan-boys minds that this sounds more like a scam than an actual sales pitch for a quality vehicle?

I’ll believe that 0-60 claim when I see it.

  • manuel

This style, that style. who cares?! This is a man with Cojones who deserves respect from little bickering children.
