All-New Mercedes-Benz CLS 450 Spotted In Traffic

With many people saying that the new-generation CLS looks a lot better in person than it does in pictures, here’s our chance to see more of the car in its natural environment.

This CLS 450 version was spotted near Stuttgart and thanks to walkoART, we get to see it next to multiple other Mercedes-Benz models, including a CLA Shooting Brake, which is actually taller than the new CLS.

In 450 4MATIC guise, the new CLS utilizes a 367 PS (362 HP) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) 3.0-liter petrol engine, and is priced from €70,906 ($83,445) in Germany.

It will do 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.8 seconds and has a combined fuel consumption of 7.5 liters/100 km, which comes down to about 31.3 mpg US, or 37.6 mpg UK.

If we were to give the 2019 CLS the benefit of the doubt, we should be willing to get really up close and personal with it before we draw any final conclusions regarding its styling – particularly at the rear. Otherwise, this short clip does very little in helping it look more appealing than it did at the LA Auto Show earlier this month.

Bland rear end with unimaginative tail lights. No rear bumper. Slab sided with no character markings like the original and 2nd generations. Kind of pisses me off.

in 40 years this car will become incredible collectible, because they’d only sold 412 of them.

  • Frank Yoster

wow that back looks like the spittin image of the chrysler 200

    • Six Thousand Times

      If you have cataracts.

  • Matthijs

Looks heavy and boring from the rear

  • Grumpy

Something has me doubting 31.3 mpg US, combined rating?

    • willhaven

I recently rented a C300 with the 2.0 turbo and managed to get 30mpg avg. in mixed driving. I was impressed, so this may be possible, but not sure it’ll be the norm is that easily achievable.

      • Grumpy

For a 4 cylinder it’s believable, but a 6? Don’t think real world figures would be close to that.

It’s probably 21.3 combined. For reference, the c43 is rated 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

        • willhaven

Very true, but my old Acura RL (with SH-AWD) was consistently able to achieve 30+mpg on the highway. That was a 4000+lbs car with an ancient 5 speed automatic. I’m sure with a very *VERY* light foot, the Mercedes can attain those numbers, but you’re right – unlikely that real world figures will match the advertised efficiency.

          • Grumpy

30 on the highway is the norm now, but back then it was work. Incredible, you had the patience to achieve such a figure.

          • willhaven

            Quite a bit indeed!

    • eb110americana

This is on the European cycle that is rated by a body separate from the EPA in the US. Their testing procedures are much less stringent, so they always rate vehicles much higher than their US counterparts. It always bugged me when people would rant about how inefficient American cars are but then compare them using two different standards. This is a great new engine with electrically driven turbos, but there is no way it is getting anywhere near 30 mpg combined while making over 360 hp and torque.

      • Grumpy

I knew there had to be a reason for the 31 claim. What’s the point if it isn’t accurate? Thanks for clearing that up.

  • WTF

It actually looks alot like the first gen with an odd front end and without the character lines almost a bland version of the 1st gen.

  • Belthronding Tinuviel

    Damn Mercedes, this is crime!

  • vaybach khan

This model will be example in future, why bad design dont work 🙂

  • AEE91

    rich, old lady car.

  • MJ Coffey

The new CLS looks so damn uninspiring. Never thought a Mercedes could be this bland/boring. The CLS is supposed to look sharp!

  • enthusia

This looks unbelievably cheap and plain.
A Honda accord is much more captivating.

  • sean tooher

    a 4DR vw GOLF ….

  • john1168

This looks terrible. So boring… I like the current one a lot more. The interior is nice though and I have no doubt it will be a better car.

  • Autoexperte
  • getoffme

    The worst or nothing.

    • Finkployd

      The best of boring

  • MarketAndChurch

    A bit underwhelming.

  • Six Thousand Times

The “banana” shape is more apparent in this rear 3/4 view.

  • Finkployd

To be fair it s the base model of a new car; it’ll always be underwhelming.
With that said why the awful orange turn signals if the car was spotted in europe ? 😰

  • Trackhacker

Wow…this is pretty ugly. Quite disappointed in the design choices they made on this one.

  • BlackPegasus

How did the looks of this car devolve into this pig? It looks diminutive and bland. Profile looks like a Lexus ES. Rear looks like a base Audi A4 or Chrysler 200.

  • HotnCool

Congratulation Mercedes Benz… This is Ugly

  • jsz00

    Looks like a depressed tortoise

    • TheHake

      Or a sad panda…

  • SteersUright

Not only a snooze-mobile, but redundant with the E-class out. Once a rolling metal sculpture that offered amazing design inside and out, going where conservative E-class owners would never allow, now its just a boring generic sedan.

  • KidRed

Ehhh, too smooth. I didn’t like the creases from the previosu gen, but this gives the appearance of someone using the blur tool in photoshop to remove all defining lines and creases. The result is like an overly photoshopped super model photo.
