Facelifted 2018 Maserati Ghibli Is Great, But It Ain’t No Mercedes-AMG E63 Rival

Maserati updated the Ghibli earlier this year, giving it up to 70 percent new parts, which include all sort of electronic features to help it drive and perform better than before.

Among the novelties is the new electric power steering, which waves goodbye to the old electric hydraulic system that offers more feel and is better overall, according to the Italian car company, which is so confident that it works that they won’t allow users to fiddle with it using the different driving modes.

Pointed towards the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, and Jaguar XF, the Maserati Ghibli remains an exotic presence, one where emotions play a big role in its appeal. In ‘S’ guise, which can cost up to £80,000 ($106,910) in the UK, it goes after the range-topping versions of the aforementioned models, such as the AMG E63 and M5.

However, even if it may be fabulous in lots of ways, adding a deeper soundtrack and a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that’s good for 430PS (424hp) and 580Nm (428lb-ft) of torque, it’s not exactly on the same level as the rest of the super saloons.

At least that’s AutoExpress’ Steve Sutcliffe’s conclusion after traveling to Monaco to test the facelifted Maserati Ghibli S, but let’s see what else he had to say about it in the film that follows.

Maseratis are highly overrated. None of them look particularly good, don’t go as fast or drive as well as their competitors and are overpriced – I don’t think they have a single car that can win compared to their rivals.

    • Bash

I couldn’t have said it better.

    • SteersUright

Thats why their lease deals are pretty spectacular here in Miami. They’re almost giving them away. They also seem to resell at 50% off after only 2 years!!

      • LWOAP

Sounds like a deal to me. Please tell me they have a GranCabrio MC Stradale.

        • Michelin

It I bought Granturismo 12 years ago I still have a nice and enjoiable car.
It I bought a MB 12 years ago, new I have a scrap mass car without value and that no one would buy.

          • maserati123

I have a Gran Tourismo also, and love it. Never had a problem. Is the best looking car on the road.

        • Belthronding Tinuviel

          Good taste

    • Autoexperte

but the GranTurismo and GranCabrio are great cars

      • Honda NSX-R

They sound and look great, always had a soft spot for them. In fact, I believed in love at first sight when Maserati released it

      • They are both beautiful and try to be an actual GT than sports car.

    • europeon

Highly overrated as you *think* they are, mine still turns heads like none of the Germans do.

      • Philip George

And that’s exactly why it is highly overrated.

        • Six Thousand Times

          Huh?

        • europeon

          Maybe for you.

    • Well you know what they say about Italian cars, you buy them with heart and not with your brain. Or otherwise we all driving German and Japanese cars.

And on plus side you do get more attention on the street, you know if you like it.

  • Honda NSX-R

More like an E43 competitor but I’d rather have an E43.

    • Bash

      Nope. Still not even close.

      • Honda NSX-R

Even if I had to between an E300 and a Ghibli I would choose the E300 😛

        • Belthronding Tinuviel

          Ok,we are getting serious here:)

        • Bash

          Thats true.

    • WTF

agreed not sure how a 400+ hp sedan was built to compete a 600hp AMG…thats just silly and the reviewer and everyone here knows that….its common sense. the Ghibli S would compete with an E43

      • gor134

It’s based off price. They are saying for $100k, E63s and M5 are much better cars than the Ghibli.

    • europeon

What you are basicaly saying is that you’d rather have an Apple iWatch over a Patek Philippe because it does everything better and it’s cheaper.

      • Honda NSX-R

Apple iWatch, Patek Phillippe..I don’t need any such watches I’m happy with my Seiko watch 🙂

        • europeon

I’m sorry. The name and the avatar should have given me enough warning about your watch taste 🙂

  • psiqtas

…yeah, b ut still based on Chrysler LX-platform…I mean MB S+E-Class platform what?

    • WTF

just like the GLE, and Grand Cherokee still share a platform not sure your point here…..

    • Michelin

Funny new, because Maserati Granturismo was designed before FIAT bought Chrysler !!!

      • gor134

Who said anything about the Gran Turismo?

    • Six Thousand Times

We debunked that one long ago.

  • Ed Ward

This Chrysler dressed up as a Maserati is a waste of Chrysler’s capital.

    • WTF

lol when you dont know cars

      • Ed Ward

If it weren’t for Chrysler money, Alfa Romeo would still be a Dead Fiat trash brand with Fiat based fwd trash. I know more about the Fiat fruad than any of you.

        • Nick099

Actually, to be more precise, if were not for GM and the idiotic deal they made with FIAT that cost them billions. Then there was the bailout…by the US Taxpayer…that gave FIAT the Chrysler Corp.

Chrysler is now keeping FIAT alive.

        • Six Thousand Times

Chrysler didn’t have any money. FIAT took it as a favour. The only value was Jeep (and Ram in NA). Be grateful FIAT kept Chrysler going an extra decade.

          • Ed Ward

Oh, Chrysler had money, 12 billion to be exact, Chrysler technology is all over those new Maserati and Alfa and Fiat products while Fiat tech is rejected by American consumers and obviously worldwide. If Fiat trash was sold in the US as a Dodge, they would actually sell in big numbers just because of the Dodge name, Fiat and it’s YUGO-ISH history scares people and the name FIAT is very unappealing. Fiat had absolutely no choice but to merge with Chrysler, their existence depended on that US government money.

          • Six Thousand Times

Even in a world where facts don’t matter, you’re still wrong.

          • Ed Ward

Even in a world where believing do matter, you’re still right.

        • Marck911

Do you really think that it was Chrsyler to save Fiat?
Americans should only be thankful to italians to have actually saved their third biggest auomaker!
Fiat completely renewed the manufactoring systems of Chrysler ( that were more than obsolete ), and turned Jeep in a big number brand by strongly increasing its quality. With Dailmer ownership Chryslers were shit cars, no doubts.
FCA is now one of the group with the best economical situation.

          • Ed Ward

It was 12 billion dollars that saved Fiat, it was Chrysler gov loans that saved Fiat, Chrysler makes 80% of company profits year after year after year. Fiat cars are rejected, it’s technology did nothing to advance Chrysler, quite the contrary, Chrysler money and technology is saving this Italian money pit.

        • europeon

          You again…

          • Ed Ward

            Yes, me again…

          • europeon

Sigh… This means only one thing: they haven’t found a cure for stupidity yet.

          • Ed Ward

OMG, OMG, OMG the sky is falling. They haven’t found a cure for stupidity yet, OMG OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG what are the scientist gonna do. NEWS-FLASH, people aren’t stupid after all, they refuse to buy into the “Italian flair” garbage.

          • europeon

Of course, some people “refuse to buy into the Italian flair”, but you are just stupid.

          • Ed Ward

Ok, alrighty then, is that a compliment or a jab, if it’s a compliment I’m not impressed, if it’s a jab then I obviously made my point. Fiat was never a profitable company and Maserati still haven’t contributed much to the BANK THAT IS CHRYSLER. You ungrateful Europeans aught to be glad the US government stepped in to save Chrysler and Fiat.

    • Michelin

Funny new, do you know that Maserati Granturismo was designed before FIAT bought Chrysler !!!

      • Six_Tymes

        hes a d.a.

      • Ed Ward

Absolutely, the new “Maserati” cars and SUV’s are Chrysler based, the granturismo still uses the old quattroporte’s chassis. I know more than anybody on this comment blog. The v6 engine is also Chrysler as well as the electrical system, this Chrysler Maserati is the best that Maserati ever had and people still aren’t buying them.

        • Nick099

Hard to overcome their spotty history.

  • LWOAP

Maserati needs to seriously update its lineup and kill off the GranTurismo already, It’s old and outdated. Seriously, FCA needs to stop dicking around and put the Alfieri into production like they said they would.

    • True the GranTurismo is ancient compare to the offering in the market. Even Aston Martin got bunch of new cars!

    • Ed Ward

There’s only so much Chrysler can do, the American side of the company is supporting itself AND a huge Italian MONEY PIT. look at Chrysler’s own lineup, starved of cash to support the Italian manufacturing footprint. FIAT is pathetic.

      • LWOAP

Ironic considering how Chrysler needed to be bailed out and are now owned by FIAT.

Couldn’t ask for a better partnership.

        • Ed Ward

For those of you who don’t understand what happened to the US economy in 2008, here is a brief summary. Americans got caught up in a rich banking scandal that forced a unprepared GM and Chrysler to reorganize their operations in order to get government cash. Chrysler, looted by the Europeans and hedge funds was forced to merge with SOMEBODY ANYBODY. Meantime, in Europe somewhere, in 2008, a conglomerate called FactoryItalyAutoTurin was burning through the(SCRAM-GO AWAY) 2 billion in cash from GM. With no money, no credible platforms to support premium brands FIAT saw a 12 billion dollar opportunity from the US government to fix Chrysler. Fiat never in it’s 100 plus year history never had that kind of money in it’s control. Now all of a sudden Maserati and Alfa Romeo got credible platforms that no one is buying. Chrysler’s money was wasted ON TWO, NOT ONE, BUT 2 italian premium brands. At the end of the day, Chrysler and GM never went bankrupt, the government forced them to reorganize and clean up DEBT in order to get money. FIAT saved itself by merging with Chrysler.

          • Six Thousand Times

Some of your premise is correct but you veered into fantasyland by the conclusion.

          • Ed Ward

Most people don’t even realize that this union between Chrysler and Fiat is actually a reverse merger where Chrysler is the mothership. Nothing gets approved without Chrysler’s income because Fiat makes nowhere near the cash Chrysler makes.

          • Six Thousand Times

That’s where you’ve gone fantasyland on us.

  • Michelin

If I’m right … is it well know that Auto Express magazine is 100% pro german cars ?
When they test German cars they raise the score at last one star.
I’m wrong or when they test Italian Cars their reports are they often full of ironic insinuations and prejudices ???

    • gor134

The Ghibli is still a pretty shit car. Not as luxurious as it’s competitors and uses parts from Dodge Darts. Have you seen the panel gaps inside?

      • europeon

Hello mr. retardidiot. That panel “gap” that your cult leader demuro told you about it’s a design feature. Ferraris and Alfa Romeo have it too, but it’s too complicated for your underdeveloped brain to understand this.
Also those parts lifted from Dodge Darts are figments of your imagination.

        • gor134

Care to explain to me how it’s a “design feature”? I’ve seen many people complain about panel gaps on their Ghiblis. Also, having been in many Dodges and Chrysler’s for awhile, to say the Ghibli doesn’t use parts from those cars is a straight up lie.

          • Ed Ward

Chrysler is the best thing to ever happen to Maserati and Alfa Romeo.

          • europeon

Because that’s how Italian design frameless door panels. Take a look in any Ferrari, Alfa Romeo or Maserati and you’ll see the same “gap”.
I’m very sorry you can only afford Dodges and Chryslers, but you should really go check a Ghibli or a QP and touch the said “shared parts” and you’ll realize they’re from a different material and they are not identical either.

          • Ed Ward

The Ghibli is a 4 door Dodge Challenger with a Chrysler turbo v6. You know good and well Fiat had no money for developing a all new rear drive platform for Maserati, Maseratis are Italian Chryslers plain and simple.

          • LWOAP
          • Ed Ward

            LMAO 😂

  • Six_Tymes

Steve Sutcliffe knows cars, more than most people. This is a nice car, inside and out. I wish i could afford to buy one.

  • solomondavidson

Christian Gnaticov – who not try telling us something we don’t know. The Maserati Ghibli has a 3-litre V6 and the Mercedes AG-E63 has a 4-litre V8. You are comparing apples to oranges. Why? IMHO Maseratis offer a helluva lot of value and a large tranche of that is character missing in too many of their stolid Germanic rivals.

  • Six Thousand Times

More “special“ than the Benz. More emotional appeal. This is the sort of thing I wish Jaguar had aimed for as opposed to the cool but bland result they got from the XE/XF.

  • maserati123

I love Maseratis. Would never buy a M-Benz or any German cars.

  • maserati123

You love the Ghibli, but I can see you are a M-Benz owner. That’s Ok I know you’ll end up owning one.
