Here’s What Seat’s Leon Cupra R Can Do In The Hands Of A Racing Driver

No chit-chat, no reference whatsoever about details such as the rear bench or storage spaces – just 4min and 11sec of Seat Leon Cupra R pure driving pleasure.

The clip posted by L’argus shows the Spanish hot hatch being pushed hard on a closed course with professional racing driver Jordi Gene behind the wheel.

The Cupra R is limited to just 799 units and is the brand’s most powerful road-legal vehicle ever. It is powered by a 2.0-liter TSI engine that’s shared with the Volkswagen Golf R, with an output of 310PS (306hp) in the manual transmission versions and 10PS (10hp) less in the six-speed DSG-equipped ones.

In both case, power is transmitted solely to the front wheels and Seat’s hot hatch will hit 100km/h (62mph) in 5.8 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited at 250km/h (155mph).

Exclusive carbon fiber details and some special colors set it apart from its lesser siblings on the outside, whereas its interior is covered in Alcantara and sports some copper and carbon fiber accents as well.

I think these look better than a gti golf.

    • Belthronding Tinuviel

Golf is boring like Korean cinema, this is absolutely 5 times better looker.

    • And also restricted by VAG unwritten policy to not out-fast the Golf. Shame…..

      • Vassilis

Not really. Even the Cupra 280 was faster than the Golf GTI.

        • I heard that folks within Seat wants to build Golf R beater… With fraction of the price but VAG board disagree with this.

I heard they limiting the Skoda too.

Oh you mean it terms of 4WD. Probably yes but there’s only so much power a FWD chassis can take. I think the next Leon Cupra will be 4WD. In any case, around a track the Leon is quicker than the R.

          • Yes i mean that, I think I read some journalist opinion on the Leon on that matter.

But with Type R looming, the hot hatch war is getting harder to win. I remember when Renault disappoint the review on Clio and at one point the Cupra 280 was the best FWD hot hatch on sale.

          • Vassilis

The new Type R is a fantastic car to drive but in some markets it’s stupidly expensive. I think with FWD hot hatches nowadays it isn’t really a matter of which is best since the top ones are very close in terms of performance. They’re all great and unnecessarily quick so you basically choose based on your budget and the car’s looks.

          • Some hot hatch did get become stupidly expensive these days. But I tend to look out for reviews from some of the respected publications, they might be close in terms of performance but frankly you need to drive it to experience it.
