New Mercedes-Benz CLS ‘Edition 1’ Launch Model Is As Subtle As They Come

The 2019 CLS is still pretty fresh, having been officially revealed this month and, as is often the case, Mercedes-Benz will roll out a special edition for its first customers before the plain vanilla ones become available.

This Edition 1 launch model was spotted recently in Germany and, unless you look really close, you may not realize that it looks a bit different compared to the rest of the range.

Starting with the exterior, there’s Edition 1 lettering on the front fenders, as well as AMG Line parts. According to Mercedes, the Edition 1 CLS also comes with LED headlights and black 19″ AMG alloys as standard, although this car apparently didn’t get the memo.

Inside, it’s got black pearl nappa leather seats with copper-colored accents and contrast top stitching, all of which are visible in this video. Other features include the IWC analogue clock, Edition 1 floor mats, chrome Edition 1 lettering on the center console and a gloss black vehicle key.

As for why it says CLS 350 on the rear, we can only assume that the ‘d’ is missing, since the only 350-badged model in the new CLS range that we know of is a diesel, producing 286 PS (282 HP) and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft).

Wow. This will replace the Camry as the generic no-brand car in insurance ads.

    • Bo Hanan

I think Mercedes dumbed-down its looks in anticipation of the soon-to-arrive Merc-AMG 4-Door. This new AMG would have competed directly with the old CLS. Not now!

      • TheBelltower

Maybe it’ll be better IRL. But man, it’s not a looker in the white and matte grey colors I’ve seen so far.

  • sean tooher

    white elephant …..

  • donald seymour

Serg, you do know that this is obviously a test mule?

    This is one ugly Mercedes-Benz.

  • Nordschleife

The edition one should have a better color than white. I also think those rims are a little bland. I don’t think car is ugly but I think they are doing everything possible to convey blandness.

I do like the shark nose of it. I wish I was into the rest of it more than I am, though.

This will probably make Europeans happy, especially the sophisticated crowd, but I’m not sure American buyers will be as turned on by something that doesn’t stand out as much, especially the type who usually go for a Mercedes product.

    • exeptor

I’m not sure who are the “sophisticated crowd”, but as european I don’ like this car at all. It has almost zero presence and has nothing to do with the previous one (I might be the 1% who actually likes the second gen more than the first one).

      • MarketAndChurch

The sophisticated crowd is who VW, Audi, and Mercedes are producing cars for these days. VW not so much, but all of their new concepts are showing that they want to move in the same direction as Audi and Mercedes, in following a design philosophy to its logical conclusions, even if that comes at the expense of beauty. And the consumer that these brands have in mind is someone who is artistically philosophical, and not necessarily your average person who just wants something sporty-looking.

      • MarketAndChurch

I also agree about the second gen CLS, and I would even extend that to the E-class cabrio of that same generation too, with the pontoon flares over the rear fenders. I loved that styling.

    P-U.

    Failed work!

It will probably grow in reality but not enough just as previous model.

Shmee did a walk around of a matte grey one that said edition 1 also….
