These Dodge Hellcats Proved Too Much Machine For Their Drivers

Weighing well over 4,000 pounds with a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 sending over 700 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels, the Hellcat version of either the Dodge Charger or Challenger is a whole lot of machine to handle, to say the least.

Too much for most of us, to be sure, and evidently far too much for the unfortunate drivers of these examples.

Head over to Copart and you’ll currently find no fewer than 11 Hellcats that have been written off by their insurers, their salvageable remains to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. (We didn’t find a single Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, though.)

Now while Copart doesn’t give the full story of what happened to each of the cars it’s auctioning off, it’s clear that not all 11 of these were totaled by drivers who were in over their heads. One, for example, suffered from some mechanical issue (ostensibly from having been even further modified). Another seems to have sat out in a hail storm, likely leaving its oily bits in tact but damaged the outside. And another was stripped down to its shell (maybe after an accident, maybe not).

The damage to the others appear to have resulted from crashes: damage to the front end, damage to the rear end, a complete rollover, or even having burned practically down to the ground. And while we can’t say for sure it was the driver’s fault, we wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case with most of them.

So now we have articles based on anecdotal data?

    • LWOAP

      You know it.

    • Auf Wiedersehen

You give them too much credit…they just make it up as they type.

“Copart doesn’t give the full story of what happened to each of the cars it’s auctioning off” – and you know this because you reached out to Copart? Or because you simply didn’t find things to copy+paste from the original source?

    • Auf Wiedersehen

      The latter…

  • LWOAP

Four of them look salvageable……buuuuut, there’s no telling what gremlins lie underneath once you actually dig into them. It could break the bank.

  • mikekil

This is what 700 horepoer cars do. It was wildly irresponsible to sell them in the first place.

    • LWOAP

      No it wasn’t.

Yes but at the same time I’m sure there are plenty of wrecked SRT 8 Jeeps just none listed. A google image search might get some good results though…

Really, follow a 5 year old Honda Pilot around in any college town for a day…you’ll change you mind fast.

I know one was written off at a track day at Road Atlanta this past fall. The owner was trying to “win” track day on his first lap out on the track in the first session of the day with a slightly green track. Coming out of turn seven he put it on its roof. The “best” part was that he was wearing flip-flops….somehow no one was surprised.

    • Why would you go track day with Hellcat… Get something that was designed to… Don’t tell me there is Demon owners that will take it to the track.

      • LWOAP

Well, people don’t always use a car for what it was designed to. I’ve seen people convert Evos and WRXs into RWD drift cars just because they could. I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone try to race a Demon on the track.

        • I don’t mind about 4wd converted to rwd, well we’ve seen tC converted into rwd from fwd. Is just that Enthusiast supposed to know what their car good at and don’t. But again it’s their car and it’s up to them on how to use it.

  • Well I can imagine some furniture based on those part. Like the Hellcat engine coffee table for instance.

  • benT

What a great looking bunch of wrecks.
THIS is where they are all destined to be.
    AND sooner than later.
How many will die in the wrecking process??
    Over-powered rubbish.

    • LWOAP

No need to upvote yourself Ben.

Well, too much of everything could (literally) kill you. I just don’t understand why people want more and more and more power… I think a 400hp BMW E39 M5 is perfect for me, so I don’t need another 100hp. (But, having said that, I still like a 501hp BMW E60 M5, LOL). But yeah, maybe people want to go very quick, which sometimes leads them to quick death. Sigh…

    • Nah it’s not about horsepower really, it’s on how responsible you are. You can die in Swift Sport if you drive it like a racer wannabe. I think Hellcat got the spotlight because they are known for their hp amount. If more horsepower means more chance to get crash, then a lot of Tesla should be in pieces now.

I thought cocaine was God’s way of telling you that you have more money than brains? That’s why these car shouldn’t have any safety features…it interferes with God’s plan of natural selection.

  • Auf Wiedersehen

Or they were in the wrong place at the right time. Could be no fault of their own…BAAA! Who am I kidding….

  • Wandering_Spirit

I just wish carmakers would match power with road holding capabilities. While this can happen with a lot of cars, also much better than these, i still maintain that 700 ponies for cars that can only go on a straight (and often not even there) is a bad idea. Especially considering the driving skills of many people in some places.
