UPS Places Largest Order Yet For Tesla Semi, Reserving 125 Trucks

United Parcel Service announced it has places a reservation for 125 Tesla Semi tractors, making it the largest known order for the electric rig so far.

The package delivery company placed the order as it expands its fleet of alternative-fuel vehicles.

UPS has provided Tesla with their own real-world trucking lane information as part of the company’s evaluation of the truck’s expected performance under the UPS duty cycle. This is a common practice for UPS as they frequently partner with innovative vehicle suppliers to help them prepare their cars for the company’s specific needs.

“For more than a century, UPS has led the industry in testing and implementing new technologies for more efficient fleet operations. We look forward to expanding further our commitment to fleet excellence with Tesla,” said Juan Perez, chief information and engineering officer. “These groundbreaking electric tractors are poised to usher in a new era in improved safety, reduced environmental impact, and reduced cost of ownership.”

UPS’ alternative fuel fleet is currently including vehicles powered by electricity, natural gas, propane and other non-traditional fuels. Prior to this order, Tesla’s largest known single pre-order came from PepsiCo, which reserved 100 trucks.

  • There could be another 100,000 pre-orders people would still continue bashing the most innovative company in the car industry. It’s in our interest that Tesla sparks competition and speeds up the process of replacing ICE vehicles. Nobody wants to die from smog.

    • Tip of an industrial iceberg

Yeah, it’s not like the goods packed in the trailers of these non-ICE trucks are polluting on our health in any way.

That’s great, but I thought you didn’t want manual transmissions to die…

  • Auf Wiedersehen

I think this proves the confidence in Tesla from some pretty big players. And good news for the rest of us, as trickle down is inevitable. I think they are off to a great start with plans for the future.

  • BlackPegasus

Well, if the Tesla Semi Truck fails it won’t be the fault of the Public Relations company hired to craft it’s image and news surrounding it – as the news stories are all good.

    – it will be the fault of Tesla failing to deliver on it’s promises.

All these orders and here I am left wondering whether Tesla will actually fill them. They still haven’t gotten all the Model 3’s out to the customers and now they have at least over 200+ orders for their semi. They better move quickly because companies, and customers, aren’t going to wait around forever.

    • danno

Bets on them not delivering more than 50 semis to paying 3rd party customers, if any.

    • S3XY

You are so right. How are you so smart?

as long as my package arrives on time, and don’t use the excuse that the delivery truck has to wait 4 hours to fully charge up.
