Waymo Self-Driving Engineer Says Humans Aren’t Meant To Drive

A self-driving car engineer from Waymo says humans aren’t designed to drive cars in a strange tweet that has left many pundits scratching their heads.

Yesterday, Vahid Kazemi tweeted of his experience almost running over five people in two days while driving a rental car without autonomous features.

“Have been driving in LA with a rental car that doesn’t have the autonomous features that my own car has. Almost crashed ten times and ran over five people in two days! Humans aren’t designed to drive cars!” he said.

The tweet has since been deleted with Kazemi claiming that it was a joke.

Nonetheless, it’s hard to ignore his ignorance. Sure, humans aren’t designed to drive cars but that doesn’t mean we can’t. In fact, many human drivers are better than any of the autonomous systems on offer. The point that many technology companies are designing their self-driving vehicles to mimic the way humans drive tells you that we can’t be all that horrible at controlling an automobile.

In Kazemi’s defence, there are millions of dangerous drivers out there that shouldn’t be on the roads but clearly he understands the error of his tweeting ways.

    stupid…

Self-driving engineer who doesn’t know how to drive a car himself…. now I’m worried about the autonomous automobiles that are going to hit the road in the near future.

  • Dre Andre

FOOL. When cars were invented, autonomous technology was not even a thought with the most advanced thinking people in those days. This is what happens when trying too hard to sell something.

  • Ray Filetti

I wonder how this guy will feel when one of his self driving cars crashes killing its occupants. No software is perfect, or unhackable. Maybe humans weren’t meant to write software either.

  • kachuks

And some people aren’t meant to procreate. This guy should be on the list.

So finally…. a little tech-nerd truth leaks out.

    • Status

It still doesn’t prove any of your past points.

      And he’s right.

By the way, where was the hateful ‘tech nerd’ in this video, or would autonomous technology prevent this even happening?

It’s okay to admit that you don’t know what machine learning is.

      • Craig

        Fuck off.

        • Status

Damn, you’re weak. You just roll over and let those awful ‘tech nerds’ take over, and your only defense is ‘fuck off’.

You should wave a white flag.

          • Craig

            You’re so brave.

  • Leconte Dave

    What a loser…

  • roy

Or how about this ? You learn how to drive

  • fgclolz

This is just another self-serving proclamation. If people were not meant to drive there wouldn’t be millions of cars on the road. Idiot!

Humans aren’t designed to do the math, cooking, building structures but here we are. I don’t like how many people who jumped in well paid jobs and ,,world changing” technologies are considering themselves as gurus who’s opinions are groundbreaking and ultimate. Still being specialist in one thing/ industry doesn’t make you overall smart or intelligent. They are forcing autonomous drive only because of big money to get.Typical trend pushing only for cash. I want to see their Autonomous predictions becoming real while most of the people wouldn’t be able to afford new car with AI tech and most of the cars on the road still will be without it. Autonomous driving is like in vitro,it is noble thing but still I’d do this on my own.

We aren’t meant to wear shoes either so what’s his point lmao

  • Obsequious Lickspittle

You shouldn’t give arseholes like him the space to fill media with his belly rumblings.
Tell him to go back to five finger knuckle shuffling as he creams over his autonomous wankmobile.
(Are you getting the love I have for such grade-A’s?)

  • Blackwater

Maybe THIS MORON wasn’t meant to drive.

These “self-driving” cars are a sin against nature.

    • Awroo

As if cars are “natural” in the first place? You make no sense.

  • Dariush

humans arent meant to be engineers, maybe ai would be far better at it?

  • Tumbi Mtika

    Idiot…

  • robotlogic

Poor little snowflake can’t handle the stress of driving, probably can’t ride a bicycle or walk and chew gum at the same time.

  • TrevP

This guy obviously doesn’t pay attention behind the wheel. I drove in LA last weekend for the auto show, never once almost crashed or hit pedestrians.

  • Auf Wiedersehen

Clearly Mr Kazemi isn’t meant to drive but don’t speak for the rest of us. And our political system isn’t meant to include Tweets either, yet here we are. I think if anything this shows how autonomous driving is a bad idea. What happens when a human HAS to drive for some reason? This…

  • Ben

One BIG correction to your article — the claim that “many human drivers are better than any of the autonomous systems on offer” is entirely false. Even with the foibles of the new systems, there has never been any human driver capable of driving as many miles as any of these systems without an at-fault collision. The vast majority of the accidents involving autonomous systems have been the result of human error (the other driver). The number of collisions caused by the autonomous car can be counted on one hand, with fingers left over to spare. Humans can drive cars, but they are vastly inferior at that activity than even today’s early-stage autonomous driving systems. Autonomous systems are so much safer than human drivers that the medical community is already sounding the alarm bells that the nation’s transplant industry is going to be in jeopardy because the majority of donor organs come from auto accident victims, the numbers of which are going to plummet once autonomous cars become the norm. You may be scared of autonomous cars, but the reality is that driving is the most dangerous activity that most people engage in…and the prime reason for that is human error. Our lives will be dramatically safer once self-driving cars take over.

I never thought of the organ donor factor. I suppose this opens up the possibility of synthetics.
