2018 VW Passat GT Combines Sportier Styling With 280HP V6 For Under $30k

An all-new Volkswagen Passat is coming to North America in 2019 but the company isn’t going to let the outgoing model sit idly by so they have introduced the new Passat GT.

Previewed by a concept at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, the production model features a host of styling tweaks that give the family sedan a sportier appearance. The model is based on the Passat R-Line and features a honeycomb grille which sits between LED headlights. A closer inspection reveals black accents, a rear spoiler, and 19-inch alloy wheels with cover red brake calipers.

Since the model is living on borrowed time, interior changes are relatively minor and include black leatherette seats with Moonrock Gray inserts. Other touches include carbon fiber optic trim, piano black accents, and aluminum scuff plates with GT badging. The model also comes equipped with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, a dual-zone automatic climate control system, and a 6.3-inch infotainment system.

Despite the sporty styling cues, the Passat GT is more show than added go. It features a sport-tuned suspension but the 3.6-liter VR6 engine carries over and continues to produce 280 hp (208 kW) and 258 lb-ft (349 Nm) of torque. Volkswagen declined to release acceleration times but said the model has a six-speed automatic transmission which allows the sedan to return an EPA-estimated 19 mpg city / 28 mpg highway.

Pricing starts at $29,090 and the model is slated to arrive at U.S. dealerships in the second quarter of 2018.

Wow, the Passat has gone backwards in the styling department!
The red lipstick on the front is not helping matters!

I’ve seen something similar done on the current Passat. The car was black and the calipers were painted to match, the shade of red used was darker, but surprisingly it looked quite good. The red on the black made for some nice accents and overall it was refreshing to see than the typical white with black accents or all black everything.

Yep, on a black car this would probably look alright, but it’s one step too far on this particular model.

Looks better than that new Jetta.

I was thinking exactly the opposite! this looks old and dated imo.

That V6 might be skewing my judgement.

the new jetta got ugly and that’s why the old and dated passat looks better.

“All new”… Ahem, if it was based on latest MQB maybe.

Why VW is going into more conventional way?? it’s good, plenty of tech & solid interior, but the design is too conventional.
