Datsun Cross Unveiled As The Brand’s First Crossover

Datsun has introduced its first crossover which is aptly named the Cross.

Previewed by the Go-Cross concept, the Cross is a rugged looking vehicle with plastic body cladding and 200 mm (7.8 inches) of ground clearance. The front of the car is dominated by a honeycomb grille which is flanked by “eagle-eye” projector headlights and prominent fog lights.

Designers also installed faux metal accents, underbody protection, and 15-inch alloy wheels. Other notable features include chromed roof rails and a distinctive shoulder line with a “bold flick toward the rear of the car.” Overall, the Cross measures 3995 mm (13.1 feet) long, 1670 mm (5.4 feet) wide and 1560 mm (5.1 feet) tall with a wheelbase that spans 2450 mm (8 feet).

The interior is relatively basic but drivers will find a three-spoke steering wheel, faux carbon fiber trim, and black seats with silver contrast stitching. Other notable highlights include an infotainment system and a relatively small third-row seat that “can be used, if needed, over short distances.”

Power is provided by a 1.2-liter petrol engine that produces up to 78 hp (58 kW) and 76 lb-ft (104 Nm) of torque. It can be paired to either a manual gearbox or an optional X-Tronic continuously variable transmission.

While the model apparently eschews all-wheel drive, the Cross comes equipped with anti-lock brakes, traction control, vehicle dynamic control, and a brake-limited slip differential. The model also features automatic headlights and dual front airbags.

The Datsun Cross will go on sale in Indonesia in March and pricing starts at 163 million rupiah ($12,208).

Considering the price this doesn’t look that bad

    • Liam Paul

if it was under 7k I would agree

    • The price is rather expensive actually. for Indonesian.

CVT is the worst automatic (not automatized) transmission…

  • Matthew Raworth

Is that the previous gen quashquai hiding underneath?

    • Jørn-tommy Skjellnes

no, its build a nissan micra underneath.

      • Miknik

Indeed, as can be seen on the dimensions; STill, the idea of a 7 seat cross over being propelled by a NA 1,2 78hp engine doesn’t make you want to go for a drive in the mountains….

  • Innocuous

It already looks 10 years old. Why do automakers insist ‘cheap’ has to mean dated?

    • Because it means they don’t have to do testing and set up manufacturing for new parts.

      • Innocuous

I dunno man… The Kwid (another low-cost car developed by the Renault-Nissan alliance) is also made to a price, and it looks 10000x better than this thing. This is just a lame excuse.

2008 doesnt look…horrible. not pretty though.

  • GT

    7 seats and under 4m long… wow

    • In Asia, these things can carry dozens people around.

  • Tumbi Mtika

Sad…. This is what Datsun is now…

  • I’ve been driving this and it’s horrible, hard suspension, wonky manual transmission, dashboard from lawn chair and it’s not even that cheap. It feels dated really.

  • TheBelltower

Makes the Aztek look good by comparison.

Looking at the HVAC control, it comes without a possibility to distribute the air and without a heater. Certainly that saves tons of money…
