Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Coming In 2019 With 700+ HP

Ford has confirmed one of the worst kept secrets in Detroit, a new Mustang Shelby GT500 is coming to battle the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

Described as the “pinnacle of Mustang performance,” the GT500 will be a fast-back coupe that is twice as powerful as the original 1967 model. Ford is keeping detailed specifications under wraps but the automaker confirmed the car is projected to produce more than 700 hp (522 kW).

Power will be provided by a supercharged V8 engine and it will enable the Mustang to become the most powerful street-legal production model Ford has ever produced. The GT500 will even surpass the output of the Ford GT which has a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that develops 647 hp (482 kW).

The outrageous performance won’t be limited to the engine as Ford says the Mustang has been “engineered to stand apart on roadways and race tracks.” That’s pretty vague but the company said we can expect “innovative track technologies, performance hardware, plus aggressive and functional track-tuned styling.”

The Mustang Shelby GT500 will be launched next year and an assortment of leaks and rumors have suggested the car will have a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine that is paired to a dual-clutch transmission. We can also expect carbon-ceramic brakes, a speedometer that tops out at 214 mph (344 km/h), and a dedicated Drag Strip mode – among other things.

Ford declined to say when the car will be unveiled but we can expect to learn more about the model in the coming months.

Woah. Can’t wait to see how this will compete against the Camaro ZL1/ 1LE

EDIT: Why does it still have the old headlights?

    • Jay

Could just be a render or like the 2018 Raptor with the 2017 Headlights.

    • eb110americana

The GT350 keeps the pre-fresh headlights as they didn’t want to reinvest in a specific hood, bumper, etc. for the low-volume model. Looks like, for consistency’s sake, the GT500 will stick with them too.

Cool. The GT500 takes on the ZL1 and the Performance Pack 2 I’m assuming is geared towards the SS. Looking forward to those comparison tests.

    • gor134

PP2 is aimed at SS 1LE

      • LWOAP

        Thanks for clarifying.

      • Vanquish

        which is an SS right…..

        • gor134

Yes but you wouldn’t compare a PP2 to a stock SS. you would compare a GT to a SS and a GT PP2 to a SS 1LE

  • Jason Miller

Are they actually unveiling it right now? I see stuff being added to the article like they’re sitting in a presentation, but no photos yet.

Every parking lot car meet is gonna look like a warzone

  • Honda NSX-R

The NAIAS would’ve been more exciting if Ford just released the GT500, but about time Ford showed a teaser!

  • Jay

annnnd Now put that GT500 engine inside the Explorer the SRT and Trackhawk need some more compition.

    • gor134

Would work much better on the RWD based Expedition imo.

      • Jay

The expedition is huge. It can work on the explorer if aren’t lazy about it. AWD only or nothing.

      • Shane

For the sake of the crowds please be AWD, we already seen the damage the Mustang can do. Last thing we need is a beefed up SUV running people over.

  • john1168

A dual clutch transmission? I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one. I’d bet on the 10 speed.

    • SteersUright

Man, what I wouldn’t give for a proper sorted DCT like the Porsche PDK system for any muscle car (Vette, Camaro, Mustang). Just imagine the thrilling noise generating by rifling off lightning quick shifts on those big V8’s!

      • john1168

A DCT would be nice. I too like the sounds and the quick shifting but I don’t think it’s gonna happen. I think they’ll use the 6 speed manual and the 10 speed automatic. I suppose they could adapt the Ford GT’s 7 speed DCT to use in the GT500 if they really wanted to use one. The 10 speed should be pretty good with it’s smoothness, quick shifts and large ratio spread. You might even hear some of the sounds associated with the DCT (crackles & pops).

  • steve

Let’s hope they improve the crash test safety – as well as upping the power!

  • 700+ hp sports car, crazy world we live in. Will we ever stop in this madness war?

  • LJ

Remember when the Mustang Cobra had 305hp? That’s what the four cylinder makes now. What a great time to be a car guy.

  • SteersUright

Cant even explain how excited I am about this car! Where the Challenger Hellcat is cool and powerful but limited to straight-line duties, this might be a true track beast given the existence of the GT350 R and all the handling components already developed for that car. Also, the 5.2L V8 might just be one of the coolest engine’s available to the “average” Joe today! Just scared we’re looking at near $80k at least given that the GT350 R is already around $70k. $80k would be too much money for any Mustang.

    • gor134

      Stock GT350 starts at $57k and the GT350R starts at $65k. The Camaro ZL1 starts at $62k and $70k for the ZL1 1LE. A GT500 ~75k wouldn’t be bad I guess.
