Ford’s Bringing Back The Mach 1 As An Electric Performance SUV

Between the new Ranger, the Bullitt Mustang, and the Edge ST, Ford has plenty of new metal to showcase at the Detroit Auto Show this year. But the one that’s sparked our imagination the most isn’t even there.

Alongside all the new models revealed, Ford announced a new performance SUV in the pipeline. It’ll be all-electric, and it’ll be called the Mach 1.

Recognize the name? It was a variant of the Mustang sold back in the 1970s, and again a few years after the turn of the millennium. This time it won’t be on a pony car, though, adopting a much larger (or at least taller) form – ostensibly to take on the Tesla Model X.

The project is being developed by Ford Team Edison, the automaker’s electric propulsion division, and is set to debut sometime in 2020. More than that, we don’t know at the moment, but the Blue Oval has released this minute-long teaser video to drum up a little excitement.

This is for real, isn’t it? They’re going to take the Mach 1 name and put it on an all electric SUV?

Couldn’t drum up hype using any other name?

    Wow…….just wow. Unbelievable.

I know it hurts your feelings but it’ll be alright.

      • LWOAP

Nah, just disappointment. Same as I was when Mitsubishi did it.

        • Dennis Scipio

only that it was a concept vehicle! and just like the Evo, the Mach 1 was just a higher trim level on a existing vehicle.

    • europeon

The ‘Mach 1’ name fits an electric abomination but from a heritage point of view is a sacrilege.

      • LWOAP

Yeah, you’re right. Regardless of what I think, it’s going to happen. I do feel it’s kind of an insult especially compared to the previous Mach 1s though.

  • Jay

Well, Im interested in seeing this. Electric sounds cool but excuse me while I imagine instead that they drove in a Shelby GT350 and put that motor in an Explorer…

  • Six Thousand Times

    Yet one more blasphemy…

  • Bash

Mach 1 name plate has heritage.. please ford don’t ruin it by slamming it on what is practically a soccer mom CUV/SUV!!

    • LWOAP

      It’s going to happen.

  • gary4205

    Epic Fail.

  • Howstar

Gets people talking about it though doesn’t it…
And its target customers won’t give two sh#ts about the heritage of the name

  • javier

well hopefully it will be lowish to the ground and can corner, not some tippy beast

  • Honda NSX-R

    Goddamnit Ford where’s the GT500

  • G82FS

I am happy they are not using it on a mustang. It would not be fair for people to not be able to hear what is spinning out of control towards them when leaving a cars and coffee meet…

Dumb video. The only thing that is going to make 1000 lb.+ battery packs viable are billions of investment in quick charging stations. Live in the boonies or off the grid and Ford will have to sell self contained solar charging stations to customers. I’m smelling HUGE government incentives. Will the incentives pie grow, or will the pie stay the same and will Tesla squeal? Two guesses, the first doesn’t count.
