Is A Maserati Levante Really Worth $20,000 More Than A BMW X5?

People looking for a stylish premium crossover with a posh badge can choose between many brands nowadays, one of them being Maserati.

The buy a Levante is the brand’s first-ever SUV, and it’s supposed to be sporty and at the same time elegant.

Doug DeMuro got hold of one and, well, let’s just say that he had more than a few reservations. His biggest issue with the Levante is the price tag: the model shown here is a base-spec version, yet it costs almost $20,000 more than an entry-level BMW X5.

Inside, the Levante has a few quirks, such as its pyramid-style center console dials or the fact that there is no physical button for the heated seats – you have to access the main infotainment screen first.

On a positive note, he really did enjoy driving it around, saying that it not only sounds great for a V6, but the ride quality is good and the handling is very impressive, too.

Levante is priced that way because it sells. No other reason. Base Levante price will soon be even higher, adding more to FCA’s budget for smaller Maserati SUV in 2020.

  • Bo Hanan

Maserati was put in the Oldsmobile-zone by FCA a long time ago. It exist because the sales haven’t dropped off enough to kill it. And there is nowhere for it to go in FCA’s line up.
Sports cars? Ferrari! SUV’s? Jeep! Sports sedans? ALFA! Going down market? Lancia, Fiat, Chrysler!
The only option is for it to go farther up market and compete with Bentley-Aston Martin-Rolls Royce. Tough group.

    • Innocuous

Lancia has been dead for a long time too…

      • Michelin

Like Datsun, Talbot, Tuker, Simca, NSU, Auto Union, oldsmobile, Plymouth, Austin Healey, Hillman, Mercury, etc.

  • Innocuous

Why is this guy so popular?

    • Bo Hanan

Awkward charm and he knows cars. And everybody has a friend like him.

      • Innocuous

I don’t. He has the charm of a Buzzfeed “journalist” (none) and always comes across as a douche nozzle.

    • europeon

I have theory. Have you seen how all pedophiles dress the same?
Well, my guess is that somehow they appeal to the prepubescent boys dressing like that, being creepy and with a mild rtarded face.
Given that 99.9% of his Youtube audience is made up by prepubescent boys (the only proof you need is to read the comments on his videos to realize that), he managed to switch candies for (badly made, misleading) car videos, add a bit of edgy-ness in there, and he has all those poor boys trapped.
Fortunately people who have enough money to buy cars give a shit about what he says.

      • Innocuous

        Fair enough.

    • kachuks

Everything else has a nerd fanboy expert. Doug is the car industry’s version of that.

      • europeon

He’a such an expert he can’t make the difference between the cruise control and the dashboard illumination intensity buttons.

        • I HAVE TO WONDER WHY THEY PUT SO MUCH ON THE SAME STALK.

          • europeon

You have just proved me what an ignorant you are. You are the perfect demuro fart-sniffer. They’re not even on a stalk, you clearly don’t know what you’re talking about and you make stupid assumptions , but I guess everyone has a right to be stupid, just like you, using caps all the time.
I don’t think you’re worth my time reply to any of the things you say from now on.

          • WOW BABE WHAT’S ALL THE HATE ABOUT? IF I HATED SOMEONE AS MUCH AS YOU DO I WOULDN’T WATCH HIS VIDEOS AND READ ALL THE COMMENTS. YOU HAD TO GO TO YOUTUBE TO READ HE COMMENTS (YES I’M GUESSING MOST ARE PREPUBESCENT BOYS) AS THEY’RE NOT LISTED HERE.
THERE ARE LOTS OF REVIEWERS POSTED HERE I DON’T LIKE BUT AVOID THEM. YOU HAVE THE LUXURY OF PASSING DOUG BUY BECAUSE HIS GOOFY FACE IS ALWAYS POSTED IN THE LEAD PHOTO UNLIKE MOST WHERE WE HAVE TO WASTE TIME CLICKING ON AN ARTICLE ONLY TO SEE, MATT FARAH, MICAH MUZIO AND HIS SIDE KICK FROM KELLEY BLUE BOOK, MUMBLING MAT, ETC. BUT YOU CLICKED AND WENT OFF THE DEEP END REAL HARD.
CALLING FELLOW COMMENTERS STUPID AND SUCH IS VERY JUVENILE AND MAYBE IT’S TIME YOU EXAMINE WHY YOU CLICKED ON THIS ARTICLE AND PUT YOURSELF THROUGH SUCH A STRESSFUL TIME.

          • europeon

If you say stupid things, that’s what you deserve. No way to sugarcoat it. It has nothing to do with doug, it has to do with the stupid thing you said about the stalk.

          • UH HUH.

    • Vassilis

I can only tell you why I watch his videos and it’s because the quirks and features part is fun. He covers thing no one else does.

  • HG504

Definitely not worth the money, with its mediocre performance, minimal tech, bland looks and cheap interior. Should cost way less than the equivalent X5, XC90 and Q7. Maserati needs a BIG shakeup and needs to start making cars people ACTUALLY want. A good start would be putting the Alfieri Coupe concept into production. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/56f8d7c95cf85d0e0a685ee54a627b1818f1c4ef5140d0ddf0d1e9e2cb3396ae.jpg

  • Adi

I’m surprised that he didn’t mention the frameless windows which are really unusual for an SUV. Actually there are just 2 SUV’s with frameless windows – this and the Urus.

  • kachuks

What is a better deal then? A well optioned Levante or its cousin the Stelvio Q? I think this is why FCA didn’t put a V6 in the Stelvio, it would have been a cheaper, better Levante.

    • europeon

They’re not in the same class. Stelvio is smaller and has really cheap materials compared to the Levante.

  • europeon

Oh, the idiot again reviewing another base model poverty spec Maserati then complaining about missing features.
How can you call yourself a reviewer, have a car for a week, have the full manual in the infotainment system, and still be so rtarded that you couldn’t find what the center console switch does.

Hint – it’s the vent switch.

And then, continuing to be an idiot, he skipped the fact you can drag and drop all the button on the menu, having the heated seat controls available all the time on the bottom line of the infotainment screen. Funny thing is that after all the backlash he acknowledged in the comments that he was wrong and he should have looked more carefully at the infotainment functions…

I only hope you’ll make an article about Lieberman’s review on MotorTrend Ignition when it’ll be available on Youtube, because that’s a proper review of the Levante.

    • I DON’T THINK YOU CAN COMPARE A GUY WHO FILMS ON HIS CELLPHONE WITH A CRAPPY MIC TO A FULL FLEDGED PRODUCTION COMPANY VIDEO. LIEBERMAN’S TRYING TO BE CUTE IS MORE UNWATCHABLE THAN MOST REVIEWERS POSTED HERE.
THE GOOD THING HERE IS YOU KNOW BEFORE YOU CLICK ON THIS YOU ARE GETTING A DOUG VIDEO AS HE’S ALWAYS PICTURED IN THE LEAD PHOTO. CARSCOOPS SEEMS TO HEDGE THE HATE BY GIVING YOU A HEADS UP. WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF US WHO DON’T WANT TO WATCH FOR EXAMPLE MATT FARAH HAWK HIS LATEST T SHIRT OR MUMBLING MAT WATSON BABBLE? NO WARNING FOR US.

    • Vassilis

You’re taking DeMuro way too seriously. More seriously than he takes himself.

      • europeon

        Because his reviews are malicious.

        • Vassilis

Come on man, they aren’t malicious. He does get things wrong from time to time but I don’t think he does it on purpose. I see him like Clarkson in a way. I don’t take buying advice from him but he’s entertaining.

          • europeon

They are. I can make a list with all the lies and omissions in this video, but you can find the article about his QPV review and read my comments about the cruise control/dashboard illumination thing.

          • Vassilis

OK, what does he have to gain from being malicious towards some cars? Think about it. He can only lose from that.

          • europeon

What does CS have to gain from bashing Maserati for each recall? Some people need to let off some steam and they do that by hating on something – I’m not talking about demuro, I’m talking about his viewers – this kind of video offers them the confirmation bias they need (just like Alfa’s reliability) and he has a lot to gain from that.
Do you have any other theory?

          • Vassilis

Honestly, I don’t think he cares for that kind of thing. My theory is what I said before. He does make mistakes and omissions but not on purpose. He just isn’t thorough enough.

  • Honda NSX-R

The Levante should get the V8 from the Quattroporte as an option

    • europeon

      Why?

      • Honda NSX-R

        Why not?

        • europeon

Yeah, ok, I agree that it should have that engine in the lineup, but would *you* buy it? Is that what stopped you from getting one so far? Because the performance is there with the S model.

          • Honda NSX-R

The V8 should be in the Levante because it would turn the already sporty Levante into something more phenomenal. It would be a great addition to the Maserati lineup, and it could perhaps convice Doug Demuro that Maserati still has it. It would compete with the likes of the X5M and GLE63, and if I were in the market for that market, I’d choose that Levante. I would choose it even over the Urus. If Jeep can make a 707 hp Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, than Maserati might as well consider offering a high performance Levante as well. I’d be glad to see a Levante of that type, it’s already a sporty CUV.

          • europeon

Hah! Do you expect this demuro idiot to review a top of the line Maserati when he only gets beat up base/poverty spec cars? He even said on Reddit that he has no interested in reviewing a proper/high spec Maserati.

          • Honda NSX-R

Lol I guess he’s anti Maserati

          • HE CLEARLY STATES HE RENTED THIS FROM TURO AND THAT THEY GIVE HIM A BUDGET TO RENT/REVIEW. THIS ISN’T A REVIEW OF THE ENTIRE LINE JUST THIS PARTICULAR CAR.

          • IF TURO HAS ONE OR ONE OF HIS VIEWERS OFFERS HIM ONE TO REVIEW, YES.

  • Michelin

X5 is a mass production car, like Cayenne, Q8 and Macan. When you park it, easily in the same parking you see other same models.
Levante is a low production car with some hand made parts. If you buy it you own a car uncommon, like bantayga or Urus. This is the difference of price !!!

    • roy

Yet the quality isn’t there considering the price. As far as competition, I think it’s closest nemesis is the Porsche Cayenne.

      • europeon

The quality is there, trust me, especially when properly spec’d. Go to a dealership and see one with your own eyes.

        • roy

Is it ? Considering the price ?

          • europeon

So you make a statement then you ask me if it’s true? Have you even seen the car in real life or just in pictures and shitty demuro vids?

          • roy

Yes I’ve seen it in real life. Don’t get me wrong, the quality is there per se but with so much of cash a customer is supposed to spend on it, i think a bit if more if the quality is expected.

          • roy

Also let me replace quality with built quality.

          • europeon

Have you seen one in person, or you’re just trolling. FYI the interior is built in the same factory where the interior for the 7-series is made.

          • roy

Yup and that’s why I just mentioned build quality which doesn’t necessarily mean material quality.

          • europeon

I’ll bite. Define it for me and tell me where the Maserati falls short.

          • roy

Panel gaps.. somewhat and odd bit of plastic down the doors… Inconsistent headlining to name a few. Mind you it still feels luxurious but not as well put together as its rivals or as its price suggests. But I’d have to say the ride was great tho.

          • europeon

Panel gaps? Are you serious? This was explained millions of times – what demuro called “gap” it’s the way Italians design their doors, you can find that “gap” in Alfa Romeos, Ferraris and all Maseratis. Can you point me to *another* panel gap except the “famous” door one?

Inconsistent headlining? Again, are you serious? You know it’s Alcantara or Zegna silk, how can that be inconsistent? That’s how suede like materials looks, nomatter in what car is in.

Odd bit of plastic down the doors??? They’re either covered in leather or have squishy foamy plastic with the storage spaces lined with felt.

Please tell me a proper “fit and finish” issue. I’m not kidding, I really want to know.

          • roy

I’m not talking about what that guy said. Personal experience. Well I must show you the pictures but then I don’t have any.

          • europeon

Yes, from personal experience, tell me where those panel gaps are. There are a lot of pictures and videos on the Internet, I’m sure you can find one and show me the gaps.

As for an Alcantara headlining, I hope you realized it was a pretty dumb thing to say

          • europeon

Two weeks have passed, and I’m still waiting for proof of what you said.

        • THE BEST THING TO DO IS GO TO THE SITE AND SPEC IT OUT. I GOT A BUILD PRICE OF $ 93,295 EQUIPPED HOW I’D LIKE IT (NO INTEREST IN SUV’S).

          http://www.maseratiusa.com/maserati/us/en/shopping-tools/configurator?modelName=LV_350A#/summary

  • Nick099

    Looks like an Infiniti.

    • brn

Doug agrees with you. He even brings up a picture of both cars and it’s pretty obvious.

  • MultiKdizzle

The production value is pretty low – kinda deters the anticipation.

  • TheBelltower

I’m no fan of Maserati, but this is even worse than normal. Complete with portholes from the Accessory shelves at AutoZone and wheels from a early 2000s Hyundai. This thing looks so insignificant.

  • SteersUright

It looks too damn much like a Buick to me, especially with the side porthole things. Maserati’s are Italian, as such they should be stunningly beautiful design showpieces. Instead, their current lineup requires sincerest apologies to the nation of great designers.

  • Ahhh, now let’s talk about reliability…

    • Michelin

Unreliable is people who speak by stereotyps without know.

  • An Existing Person

Definitely not. Even if the Levante is less common, its awkward styling, lackluster tech, questionable reliability, and sketchy build quality makes it a tough purchase over any of its competitors.

    • europeon

“Questionable reliability” based on what exactly?

      • Michelin

He didn’t drive and didn’t see a Levante in metal and leather !
He speak only on pictures and magazines …..

  • StrangerGP

It’s funny how for the first few minutes complains about Maserati changing forever with the debut of the first ever SUV, but he didn’t say anything when he was reviewing the Bentayga.

  • AFTER READING THE HATE COMMENTS I EXPECTED TO HEAR THE CAR TRASHED. WHAT I HEARD WAS HE ACTUALLY LIKED IT EXCEPT FOR THE $80K PRICE TAG. I WOULD HAVE NEVER GUESSED THAT WAS THE PRICE LOOKING AT THE QUALITY OF THE MATERIALS ON THE INTERIOR. SO VALUE WISE PERHAPS HE’S CORRECT.
