Kia Telluride Full-Size SUV Concept Reportedly Heading To Production

Kia’s new Forte might have just made its debut at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, but the Korean automaker is also working on another, totally different, project as well.

This project is the production version of the Telluride Concept that debuted a couple of years ago in Motor City, as confirmed to GoAuto on the sidelines of the Detroit Show by the brand’s President and Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, who simply said: “yeah, we are working on that car, actually”, when asked about it.

The Telluride (production name unconfirmed) will sit at the top of the firm’s SUV range, above the Sorento, and it will be offered in North America and other markets, according to Kia Europe’s Chief Designer, Gregory Guillaume.

“I could imagine that there are other markets that would be interested in taking it… apart from America, so there could be other markets that are interested. For example, the one we used to have before the Mohave, it was pretty popular in Russia and those countries.”

However, “Europe doesn’t make much sense”, Guillaume said, adding that “it is a more difficult segment for us. We are pretty good with Sorento with large SUV in Europe”, and right-hand drive markets such as Australia are currently under the question mark. It also remains unknown when it will be launched or where it will be manufactured.

The concept displayed by Kia in 2016 was underpinned by the same architecture as the Sorento, but it had a larger footprint, a boxy exterior design and a minimalistic cabin. It also had a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combined a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine and an electric motor for a total of 400 horsepower, which might be one of the options available for the production version.

👀👀👀 If the production car is anything like this other automakers need to watch out. I wonder why this isn’t being sold as a Genesis though?

    • bd

B/c Genesis has 3 crossovers on the way.

    • LWOAP

Probably doesn’t fit the design Genesis wants to go with. I do know they are making an SUV though.

  • Six_Tymes

Volvo + Kia design, never though i would see this mashup

  • kachuks

Just work on that front fascia a little bit.

  • Honda NSX-R

I’m not the biggest fan of SUVs, but I love the way this looks.

    • Bo Hanan

I like it too even though I’m not completely sold on the styling. It’s striking but not beautiful.

      • Vanquish

beautiful an SUV dont seem to go together at all…….ive seen nice looking suvs but never one I would call beautiful…….and im sure thats by design

        • Bo Hanan

          Eye of the beholder.

  • Innocuous

  • Leconte Dave

Just work on the tail lights

  • marioGTI

Absolutely loving the style, but the all display dash is not my thing..

  • Christian Wimmer

Very Volvoish. Side profile screams XC90.

    I like it.

  • donald seymour

OMG…Talk about the blood fight that is about to happen once this step on the scene. Lookout all you other SUVs.

  • Vanquish

This should have been a Genesis, not sure why with Hyundai having a luxury brand they need to keep pushing luxury models to Kia at all…this looks like what a G90 would look like as an SUV with some XC90 thrown in and it looks really good

  • Dennis Scipio

I could see a production model of this.

  • Bash

    A bit too late!

  • Its weird, but when I saw the photo, I thought that this is what the Bentley Bentayga should have looked like…nice, premium and masculine design…

  • Astonman

Telluride is the perfect name for it.

  • Jay

Not with a face looking like that I hope.

  • SteersUright

Stunning interior!! Regal almost Bentley-like exterior aside from one major design misstep: that absolutely atrocious, cheap looking grille. Also, to nitpick, not a fan of black on the lower front bumper nor the inset headlights, but those aren’t terrible, just not to my taste. All body-color for the bumper would have been classier imo. I do LOVE the paint job though, that color looks so deep and striking. Lastly, I think it would look much classier with the sort of continuous-glass, pillarless look that Audi and MB seem to know how to pull off. Overall though, this is one heck of an exciting looking SUV from Kia. Hope they make that interior true to concept!!

  • TheHake

    I likey!

  • Miknik

If they stay close to the concept, it will look more British, expensive and better proportioned than the Bentley Bentyaga, and all that despite looking a lot like a Volvo XC90….

  • Dude

RIP Lexus. It will wipe out the weak 313HP RX.

    • no25

hahah please. A Kia and a Lexus don’t compete. The RX will do fine. People dont just buy cars solely on HP, sweetheart.

    • Status

Nobody is going to cross-shop a Lexus with an unreliable Kia, not even if the Kia has more HP. I’d gladly pay more for the lower HP RX than the lower-priced, fast-deprecating Kia even if it had five times the HP.

  • StrangerGP

    they’re copying Volvos now, huh?

  • Marty

Really nice stance. Upright and elegant.
But that kind of headlights (even when Rolls Royce use them) always remind me of cost saving Russian army trucks. Not really what I want on a premium car.

  • Braddo

Pretty amazing really for a Kia. Who would have thought 20 years ago … does have a bit if a Volvo look but it does make it look quite premium. I like the inset lights at front and the slight shape of KIA grilles on the side window profile

  • smartacus

i’m all for this KIA Talleride,
    but shouldn’t it be a 3-row?

  • ediotsavant

    Build it!

  • Classic Bob

Kia Bentayga? Wouldn’t take much more than replacing the front clip…

    • exeptor

      Or maybe Kia Cullinan :).

  • exeptor
  • Auf Wiedersehen

Coming very soon, the KIA East Chicago and by 2021, the KIA Boulder City and Nantucket.

  • Blanka Li

The exterior styling is a misstep. Looks like a Nissan Armada, one of the ugliest SUV’s currently on the market.

  • no25

Looks almost like what the Bentley Bentayga should’ve become instead of the mess it did become smh.

  • Biggsy

    Life size Kia Soul.

  • Puddle Jumper

Brings back memories of the late 90s Toyota Land Cruiser. I hope they don’t massage the concept too much and loose an opportunity to bring back the rugged SUV design that will stand out above all these crossovers presently on the market.
