Abandoned Subaru Showroom From the 1990s Houses Hidden Gems

It would appear that the small European island country of Malta has been withholding something that car enthusiasts around the world might be interested in.

This deserted Subaru showroom, located in the small town of Mosta, is said to have shut down in the late 1990s according to CarsAddiction, when one of its rivals started importing similar models with improved services. As you can see, there are quite a few noteworthy models parked inside, yet none more worthy than that white XT Turbo.

The 30+ year old two door coupe still has its delivery tag on the window, which means that it could be a really low mileage model (only delivery miles). Back in the late 80s, this would have been considered a futuristic car thanks to the wedge shape styling, digital dials, air suspension and so on.

Since it could be the only brand new Subaru XT in the world, it’s conceivable that it would fetch a neat sum of money at an auction – if it ever leaves that showroom, of course.

As for all the other models, we spy a Subaru Sambar, multiple Imprezas, a Justy and the previously mentioned XT 4WD Turbo (in RHD mind you).

How much do you reckon that XT Turbo would be worth today?

Thanks to Cristian for the tip!

  • Autoexperte

Dust, inflate tires and fill tank and you’re ready to go

    • Actually in some of the footage, we can see leakage. And all the rubber parts is probably has worn out and many of the parts get seized.

  • Howstar

Someone somewhere has the keys to that XT.

  • Christian

That Christian guy who gave the tip sucks and is a (R)acist… Trust me,I would know.

    • Six_Tymes

demonize anyway you can, is that it?

  • Six_Tymes

I wish i could buy one. whats interesting is, you can tell there is a care taker. also interesting i think is that, the location seems like it might be prime for another type of business, yet no one has. must be crazy legalities going on.

  • Obsequious Lickspittle

See this article on carthrottle and some contributors state that the showroom isn’t abandoned and that the owner gives prospective buyers the run around.

  • DM

This is the coolest thing ever! I wish modern Subies still had frameless doors. I’ll take that Impreza and a 90s Outback please.

  • A. Borg

I drive past there every once in a while and had noticed the Imprezas, but had never noticed the XT before it got posted on a Facebook group a few days back. Apparently the owner is frequently approached about those cars, but does not want to sell them.

With Malta being a RHD country, strange JDM models and even kei cars are not really uncommon either, so a Justy or a Sambar or a Suzuki Cappucino or a Mitsubishi Mini Pajero or a Daihatsu Copen don’t really get a second look here.

  • Wandering_Spirit

They sold all those unpainted bumper models as “base model” everywhere in Southern Europe. They were for the people who wanted the substance with no frills (often also no aircon etc.). Very common sight in the 1980s. The XT is interesting and also what seems an old Legacy maybe.

  • Six Thousand Times

These stories always blow me away. How did they close but not liquidate the inventory?

  • Six Thousand Times

Liquidation in this case meant disposing of all. As in selling and walking away with the money rather than leaving the cars sitting there.
