Boxy 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB Wants To Be Your Affordable Mini G-Class

A prototype of the Mercedes-Benz GLB was filmed on the streets of Germany earlier this week.

The plastic cladding and camo forbids us from seeing its design, but we already know what to expect: a boxy-looking SUV, based on the same architecture as the brand’s upcoming compact models, including the new-gen GLA.

Previously referred to as the ‘baby G-Wagen’ due to its appearance, the new Mercedes-Benz GLB will sit above the GLA. It will be marketed as a roomier and more SUV-like alternative.

The interior of the small SUV will look familiar, and will adopt features from the new A-Class, including the dual-screen layout, with voice recognition, named Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX).

The engine family will likely be carried over from the upcoming GLA, and include new and updated units developed by Daimler and Renault.

It’s unknown yet whether AMG plans to have its way with the GLB, but hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the vehicle are expected.

  • Bash

Don’t want to sound negative here but I know a failure when I see one..

    • Merc1

Are you a GM supporter by chance?

      • Bash

        lol, no …. I’m a fair guy.

        • Merc1

Clearly not. I see nothing but sales coming for anything in this segment, not sure how you see failure.

          • no25

once again, of course the mercedes fanboy would say this (and assume everyone is a “GM supporter” – btw no, I am not one either).

          • Merc1

Nah, if it was was a failure I’d call it too, but how can you see a failure before the car is even shown? It’s a dumb comment.

          • no25

“I see nothing but sales coming for anything in this segment” How can you predict sales before the car is even shown. Same dumb comment…

          • Merc1

SUVs sales on fire. Sorry, but you don’t know what you’re talking about. We know this.

          • no25

I do actually. Stop acting like the 5 year old you are and grow up. You probably dont even own a Mercedes you obsessed fanboy. Stop signing your comments. This isn’t an email section.

          • Merc1

You don’t know squat actually. You’re the one arguing this like a 5 year old. I own a Mercedes, BMW and a Lexus so try again with your lame ASSumptions. Wait for it………..

          • no25

you must live a sad life. i too can make up what I drive. I have a Lambo, Lexus, Benz, and Audi. look at me. lmao gtfo

          • Merc1

Nah what’s sad is that you think you’re worth making something up for. You’re a NMFF.

    • Christian Wimmer

To be fair the GLK was a mini G-Class and it was a sales success. It’s replacement, the GLC, is selling even better.

This thing will very likely be a hit.

  • Obsequious Lickspittle

I’m pretty sure I drew that car when I was 4 years old.

If AMG does tune it, what will it be? I’m going with GLB 53.

  • caddy45

The second coming of the HHR…???? Hahaha.

  • Toronado_II

We call it mini and also FAKE G. It could got the look but not his skill.

  • Rocket

The front overhang on this thing is beyond excessive. Some designs just don’t work with transverse architecture. If the camo is masking production sheet metal, this is going to be one homely crossover.

  • BlackPegasus

    Looks like shtt 😒

    is it baby g?

  • SteersUright

Cool idea, I LOVE boxy cars and trucks and am so over the jelly-bean designs we have all over the place.
