Ill-Advised Overtaking Maneuver Goes Terribly, Horribly Wrong

This is how easily one mistake can get compounded into another, leading to what can only be described as a seriously scary crash.

Even though we don’t know why the driver of the red Nissan Micra overtook that box truck using the shoulder, he/she really was to blame for the accident than ensued.

It might have been a medical emergency, or (even worse) it’s possible the Micra was racing the silver sedan on the left, but in any case, it was definitely the wrong thing to do

What happened next is, as you can see, pretty self-explanatory: the driver of the Micra lost control and hit a ditch, flipping over and landing violently back onto the road.

We really hope that whoever was driving the Nissan, as well as any passengers that might have been on board, made it out unharmed. The good news is that the third-generation Micra is actually a reasonably safe car, having earned a four-star EuroNCAP rating before the independent organization changed its rating system and active safety tech was taken into consideration. In an accident of this magnitude, though, all bets are off, four stars or not…

People have bad perspective and no idea of theirs cars limits. The red car should have anticipated the possibility of the truck moving towards it once they saw the other car passing too. A good plan-b would have been to brake and get behind the truck without upsetting the dashcam car behind it.

    • James Denz

Appears to me that the person driving the red car was WAY in the wrong by attempting passing on the right and in the shoulder. Drive like an idiot and expect the worst.

      • Bo Hanan

        To: javier & James Denz-
Obviously, the preference would be not to do it in the first place. My comments were based on the idiot in the red cars committing to doing the deed. They explain how this person could have saved themselves from the tragedy.
        More male, less estrogen please.

    • javier

how about driving like a normal human being and not dangerously passing on the shoulder

      • Bo Hanan

You don’t get it. “You don’t!”

    • Wandering_Spirit

I tend to think the same. Sometimes people watch in the mirror and instinctively steer towards the thing approaching in the mirror…..and the Micra is safe but hardly a road holding car

  • TheBelltower

Gotta say, that Micra has a very strong roof structure.

  • LWOAP

Seems to me that both cars (the Micra and the Camry) were trying to overtake the truck at the same time.

  • Marty

Again an example of an accident that happens because two drivers take chances at the same time.

Simple rule: if you can’t meet yourself in traffic, stay out of traffic.

  • wait a minute

Undertaking for when you are going to the undertakers.

    • LeStori

This was not so called undertaking, legal in many parts of the world including where I live, but rather using thw emergency lane to pass another vehicle, In this case it was appropriate as they became an emergency.

  • Knotmyrealname

Was that a red handbag that dropped out of the Micra after the crash? Maybe a female driver.

    • LeStori

It is a red bag. And the bag may belong to a female. I have seen many males do what this person was doing. I have rarely seen females doing this type of thing. Presumably they do. Just never seen it.

      • Marty

Judging by the bad driving, I would put my money on a male driver. That’s just statistics.

        • Knotmyrealname

I hope a female passenger wasn’t the victim of some guys stoopid driving here.

  • 2014?!

  • Finkployd

How thoughtful, she activated her hazard lights before ramming into the trees

  • Socarboy

The red Nissan’s driver must have been from South Carolina…believe it or not, I’ve seen bone headed moves like this on SC roads.

    • YUDHA BAGASKARA

micra never sold in states and i can see russian plate

  • Rot

    Russia?

  • G82FS

While the Micra definitely should not have been passing on the shoulder so ultimately is responsible (unless that is legal wherever this is), the truck driver purposely swerved toward it which is what caused the actual accident.

  • Car Design Fan

The truck driver moved to the right to make room for the Camri, which initself almost crashed into tha facing traffic – look at the end he almost crashes a blue track.
two dumb drivers (the Micra and the Camri), one smart truck driver.

  • Bob White

    Well deserved crash.

  • Plutonium

    … Meanwhile in Russia?

  • Wandering_Spirit

They made it alive to me.

  • Richard Ny

I lived overseas for many years and I can tell you first hand that depending what country you are in this is 100% normal. In south Italy this maneuver is on the driving exam. He obviously failed this test. If this road were in the area where I was living this road can easily handle 5 or 6 wide.

Something I would experience on a daily basis is being in the left turn lane and a car pulling up on the outside beside me. Basically in the oncoming traffics lane. No worries he will attempt to out accelerate you and then cut you off. If that plan fails the back up plan is to start merging right into my car door. Scoot over buddy, we are 5 wide in a two lane road!

I sure miss it, I would treat every trip in the car like race. Nobody seemed to even care, the police would do the same. A Carabinieri (police) officer once told me as long as you don’t cause an accident they didn’t really care.
