With A BMW M550i xDrive This Good, Who Needs An M5?

The BMW M550i is one heck of a set of wheels. With 456 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque on tap, it’ll rocket to 60 in under four seconds – making it quicker than the previous M5 with which it shares its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, and just half a second more lethargic than the new one.

If that new M5 weren’t such a bonkers performance machine, we’d scarcely think it’d be necessary. In fact, looking at this particular machine, we can’t help but wonder if this wouldn’t be the one we’d want.

On display at the world’s largest BMW dealership, located in the Persian Gulf emirate of Abu Dhabi, is a brand-new M550i xDrive, all decked out in white with a deep brown leather interior. Making it even more tempting is the optional M Performance body kit it wears and those oversized 20-inch alloys in a dark grey finish.

Even more compelling is the price gap from this model to the full-on M5. While the top-level model will set you back over $100k in these United States, the M550i sells for less than $75k. That’s a heck of a difference – about enough to buy a base Ford Mustang with the EcoBoost turbo four. If we didn’t have the six figures to spend, we get the feeling we’d be plenty satisfied with the next best thing.

Shame that, with new emissions regulations coming into effect, the Bavarian automaker has reportedly had to shut down production of the M550i – albeit only temporarily. Here’s hoping that when it reemerges with new restrictions in place, it won’t prove any less tempting.

Christ … supercar acceleration figures are so common these days.

If you told people a decade ago that a 0-60 time of under 4 seconds wasn’t that special they’d laugh at you.

Now $40,000 hatchbacks are doing it no problem!

  • LWOAP

Meh, I’ve already seen this thing on Facebook. It’s nice, and all, but ya know, the M5 is still better.

Also… *cough* Abu *cough* Dhabi *cough* advertorial. *cough* *cough*

    • JohnCarscoop

Do you know what advertorial means?

      • Zandit75

Can you please tell us why there are so many stories from this dealership that all look to be very similar to each other.
Are they paying to have their content published on this site?

        • JohnCarscoop

No they are not. There is no advertorial on this site

          • Zandit75

Nice side step of my first question!! 😛
Would you share photos from my local Ford Dealership on any new Mustangs they get in?
I’m not understanding why there are so many stories of very similar cars from the one dealership.
Surely the amount of comments you get regarding this(And all the render stories from particular photoshoppers) is being noted?

“a newspaper or magazine advertisement giving information about a product in the style of an editorial or objective journalistic article.” Consistently posting about BMWs with random M Performance parts specificaly from the Abu Dhabi dealership gives us the idea that this is an advertorial.

          • gor134

I’m responding to this post referring to he post and your comment. Why’d you delete my comment? It was not off topic, I wasn’t personally attacking anyone, and I kept it civilized.

          • jsz00

It’s a freaking BMW… I don’t see what’s so special about that. All these stories from Abu Dhabi Motors.

    • MultiKdizzle

Of course the M5 is better, no one has disputed this.

  • T2X

Omg, this Brown Wood Interior looks so amazing… amazing ugly!

  • Tumbi Mtika

I’d get it without the performance package and take off the ///M badge.

    Then I’d have a sleeper.

  • AMG_Power

With all the options this has, isn’t it getting close to M5 price?

  • Thomas Triantis

Unfortunately, I think there is already an announcement for stopping the production of the M550i, due to emission matters, until they come up with a filter capable of meeting the new standards.

  • Eagle By Singer

I swear, a few days ago someone said that this dealer has a new BMW M550i, and that there would shortly be an article on it by this BMW fanboy.

    And guess what? It happened.

  • Bash

I’m not a bmw fan, but I can live with this, looks amazing, inside out.

  • Honda NSX-R

But it doesn’t have drift mode! Or does it…

  • Evan McMaster

    Really ugly wood wow

BMW needs to be saved….They are in very serious trouble when it comes to their interior design. Looking at Mercs new interior design direction….Seems BMW are neighbours with The Flinstones.
