2019 Mazda CX-3 Takes Over New York With Electronic Parking Brake

Well, Mazda’s mystery New York Auto Show wasn’t at all significant as we’d hoped. Instead, it is simply a 2019 Mazda CX-3. Updates are minor to say the least.

The exterior of the new CX-3 is almost identical to the 2018 model. However, this is no bad thing as the CX-3 remains one of the most appealing and attractive vehicles in its segment. Subtle changes include a new front grille, additional chrome accents, Piano black elements, and the addition of Crystal premium paint.

Elsewhere, the 2019 CX-3 gets revised LED taillights and 18-inch wheels.

Most of the changes enjoyed by the 2019 CX-3 are limited to the interior. For example, an electronic parking brake has been fitted. The Japanese firm claims that this “allows for a significant increase in storage place.” We’re not so sure about the word ‘significant’ in that statement but nevertheless, some customers may be pleased to have a new button to play with…

In all seriousness, the electronic parking brake has allowed Mazda to fit an armrest and relocate the cupholders.

A better engine

Elsewhere, Mazda says the CX-3 receives a refined SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter petrol engine. This powertrain delivers 148 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque and is said to be more fuel efficient than the outgoing one. Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control is also featured, allowing for better steering.

Inside, there is some extra leather in the cabin, and redesigned seats promising to offer improved support. Additional changes include suede-like material on the dashboard and door panels as well as red louver accents around the air vents. Rear seat passengers also get a center armrest with built-in cupholders.

Sales of the 2019 Mazda CX-3 will start in spring 2018.

The CX-3 headlights don’t look anything like the teaser image.

    • Nordschleife

I have to agree but if this is it, Mazda needs an ass whooping.

b/c that was a pic of the Mazda 6, which now is available with AWD…

        • Wojtek Warias

I don’t think that’s true? They said it’ll get AWD eventually.

          • pjl35

crash test filings were filed by Mazda with the NHTSA for 2018 that included an AWD version.

          • Wojtek Warias

Holy shit that’s awesome. If it gets AWD its definitely going on my list for next possible car.

    • Autoexperte

this was a early April joke

      • wait a minute

haha exactly what i thought too.

Wow, an electronic parking brake, how thrilling…

    • Kate E

…. and it uses the same switches and buttons as the other Mazdas.

  • C172fccc

The first thing I noticed when I got in a Mazda CX-3 for the first time was that there was no arm rest. Glad they finally added one.

  • SteersUright

The CX3’s back seats are inexcusably small and unusable. Its a handsome little thing, outside of that. But if it can’t seat at least 4 well, whats the point of a CUV?

    • Malik

Exactly. I liked CX-3 in person but it is hardly practical in terms of legroom and storage.

    • Kate E

      Get a CX-5

      • SteersUright

        You buyin?

    • Matthijs

The point is that CUV’s supposed to look cool, funky or tough. And not everyone has 3 kids or sits in his or hers car with more than one people often. It’s one of the best looking SUV’s and if you don’t need the space its a great car

      • SteersUright

No, the point is CUV’s are meant to be practical while looking “cool, funky or tough”, as you put it. The “U” in CUV gives that away. Otherwise, most who just need 2 seats tend to go with something far sexier. If you cant seat 4 reasonably well in this segment you cant expect to do very well. And surprise, surprise, the CX3 does not sell anywhere near as well as Mazda might like.

        • Matthijs

CUV/SUV/Crossovers are booming, also the small ones. It’s a car based on a B-segment car, if you want proper space for your whole family you buy a CX-5. There are enough other small or compact cars that people don’t buy for practicality or space. The CX-3 is the most value fixed car in its segment btw. You usually see one or two elderly people in small crossovers like the Captur or 2008

  • Harry_Wild

Needs a 2.5″ Turbo as an engine option!

  • pjl35

Glad they replaced the steering wheel with this new one. I always hated the old one when it was on every Mazda.

  • Kyle Newberry

    Also apple car play

  • Callanish

Didn’t anyone read today about a future release of an RX-9 and talk of a 929 which looks like it’ll be an upscale luxury Mazda. There’s a photo of the RX-9 out there posted today. I think this is more worthy of making news than a cx-3 interior upgrade.

  • Shahul Usman

Side comment.. Is Mazdaspeed a thing still?

  • atomicbri

This is the big reveal?? LOL ! They sure did trick me. I got an email from them yesterday telling me the countdown was on for a big reveal for today and put this pic there with the email. This is not a CX-3 and it has like a carbon fiber piece in the lower valance. So I am not sure what’s up! Early April Fools?

  • Matthijs

No this isn’t the big reveal. There are more, clear pictures of the small facelift voor de CX-3, It just has slightly different head- and taillights, bit more chrome (on the front bumper for example, new 18″ wheels and bit higher quality interieur, like the tunnel with the buttons for the navi and shift gear. The one on this teaser must be the Mazdaspeed6, the headlights are identical

Mazda3 will be shown later, cause that will be on sale in 2019

  • Kate E

lol so the announcement or teaser was for 2 additional cupholders on the CX-3

  • Ruel Lewis

    Really Mazda, Really…………

Electronic parking break has been like in Japan since its launch.

  • willhaven
    • OdysseyTag

Pic of my face right now.

  • Bruce D Ranger

Wow, no mention of the six speed manual as shown in the 6th photo.

  • javier

it would be interesting if it had a 250 horse version, but like all mazdas it’s all show and no go . Do not want anything from mazda.

  • erly5

If this was the big reveal then Mazda need their baws booted!!!

  • Janar Siniväli

This electronic parking brake is an annoying “obligatory” feature of more and more new cars here in the nordic countries.
It is useless in winter. And I don’t mean parking.

  • gregory cassanova
