Now That’s A Concept Worthy Of The Mitsubishi Eclipse Name

Somewhat controversially, Mitsubishi decided to revive the Eclipse name by slapping it onto a compact crossover. Fortunately, Carscoops reader Enoch Gabriel Gonzales has decided to render a sports car much more fitting of the Eclipse badge which, as you might recall, used to be a sports coupe/convertible.

By taking clear design inspiration from the Eclipse of the mid-1990s, Enoch has been able to create a coupe which is both a fitting homage to the original while also having many design elements needed for a modern-day Mitsubishi.

Up front, the coupe adopts a pair of aggressive headlights with incorporated LED daytime running lamps. Also rather eye-catching are the X-shaped lights embedded into the front bumper which, fittingly, has a subtle interpretation of the dynamic shield fascia present on current Mitsubishi models.

The rear is also a refreshing mix of retro and modern styling. Like the original Eclipse, the taillights feature prominent bulbs and sit either side of a large ‘Eclipse’ badge, while there are also quad tailpipes and a blacked-out diffuser.

Despite once being an enthusiast’s brand, Mitsubishi’s philosophy has changed drastically in recent years and is now focused almost exclusively on producing SUVs and crossovers. But while we can live with the automaker using the Eclipse name for an SUV, its decision late last year to dub an electric crossover concept the E-Evolution borders on heresy for those who remember the Evo rally homologation special and its multiple generations.

It isn’t horrible, but it doesn’t shout “Eclipse!”, either. I looks a little too big, and not enough curves, as if trying to emulate the styling of the most-unloved Eclipse models, rather than those that were popular. That roofline needs to be arched more (the C-pillar thickens at the bottom on the most-recognized Eclipse models; here it stays even… or flat); the whole design looks coherent, but dated, as if it was one proposal for the 90’s-era models.

2003 Pontiac Sunfire? This design is uninspiring and will age quickly I think.

    looks good

    • Mill0048

Yeah it does! It has a strong essence of the 2nd gen. Poor unloved 3rd and 4th gens, lol.

Looks like something from the last decade

    • dumblikeyou2

I’ll raise you a decade for your one decade. Definitely mid-90s.

    • manuel

      why not?

  • Bash

Interesting! But looks like unfinished business.

  • Lloyd Anthony D Peters

Feasible as well. I could see this based on the G37/370z/Q60.

Somehow, I don’t expect Mitsubishi will be basing its models on Nissan platforms…

  • Jørn-tommy Skjellnes

Its only you north american people who miss the eclipse coupe, in europe and asia 2 door sedans and coupes not selling well.

    • LWOAP

And you are telling us this, why?

      • Jørn-tommy Skjellnes

        because i can 😛

        • LWOAP

          Point taken.

      • Nordschleife

But they don’t sell well here currently so he really hasn’t made a point. We miss them because they used to sell well and it’s nostalgic for us but I am pretty sure it was nostalgic for them too decades ago.

We miss the bang for your buck original Eclipse-Talon-Laser cars.
          Cheap-tunable-good looking.

I thought that named looked familiar. This guy also did some renderings of the Lancer and Lancer Evolution. He also did that……um……..interesting face lift of the Charger and Charger Hellcat.

I still think he was trolling us on that last one.

I’m not fully sold on this one. It’s a good start but it needs tweaking.

  • Alter Ego

What an excellent concept. Keeps the heritage in many ways but also look like a 2018 production car. I don’t see any fault in it other than how similar it looks to the gt86 in the front.

  • Seven23

Why Nissan don’t doe anything about that ?

  • BlackPegasus

    Looks dated by two decades.

  • MultiKdizzle

That is quite a well put-together design, I really like it.

I’m seeing strong INFINITI lines, and G35 coupe tailights.

  • Matt

Looks like a really old model that is only been kept alive by a disjointed facelift, so definitely a Mitsubishi…

  • manuel

Beautiful.Smooth design. Modest. no lines going all over the place. Sanity!

  • Shobin Drogan

I don’t get the Toyota Mirai front and rear bumpers.

  • SteersUright

Looks like a Grand Theft Auto digital and generic automobile. It isnt offensive, it also isnt beautiful. That aside, there is no real reason to visit a Mitsubishi dealership these days, they have been mismanaged to near death. Im amazed they’re still in the game at all actually. Sad, as they once had really cool vehicles.

Just a plain dull sport car, It could re-badge as any Chinese car and nobody will say “hey, That’s an eclipse”

Should throw away the 90’s design, and just keep on the concept of cheap and sexy, maybe roadster eclipse ?

  • Miknik

Looks like something form the 1990ies with an E-Bay body kit on it. Not what i call modern or attractive…
