Engineers at Ford have been spied testing what could very well be an early test mule of the recently-announced ‘baby’ Bronco. Either that, or this is another baby SUV from the Dearborn firm.

‘Hang on a second, that just looks like a Ford Fiesta?’ you may be asking. Well, you’re not wrong. However, if you look beyond the typical Fiesta bodywork, you’ll notice that there are some very interesting things going on under the skin.

A key giveaway that the underpinnings of this mule are unrelated to the Fiesta are the presence of five wheel bolts where the Fiesta typically just has four. Furthermore, the ride height is significantly different to a typical Fiesta and there are a set of flared wheel arches to accommodate the widened track.

Of course, it could be a different small SUV that Ford is preparing to add to its range – either for global consumption or for specific regions like Europe, India and/or China. We just don’t know at this point.

Whatever Ford is testing, we know that Ford has some exciting models up its sleeve, including the mini Bronco. The existence of this vehicle was confirmed just a few days ago and it will be a compact, rugged SUV that currently has no name. A single teaser image (above) of the vehicle has been published and it definitely looks promising.

If this mule is indeed of this mini Bronco, or any other tiny Ford SUV, we can expect to see many other similar mules and prototypes over the coming 18 months.
