The Mercedes-AMG E63 S Estate is exactly what it says on the label: an ultra fast station wagon that’s as practical as your neighbor’s diesel-powered E-Class Estate.
The E63 Estate has an enormous boot, plenty of rear legroom and headroom, a quick and accurate steering, a comfortable ride and premium materials inside.
The main attraction in the cabin is the dual-screen layout that combines two displays, one for the infotainment system and one replacing conventional dials. It looks great and is easy to operate, but apparently not that intuitive compared to BMW‘s iDrive.
Naturally, this Estate’s main attraction is its engine, a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that’s good for a dazzling 612PS (604hp) and 850Nm (627lb-ft) of torque in the S version tested here, which will sprint from 0 to 100km/h (0-62mph) in just 3.5 seconds.
Mercedes-AMG currently dominates the segment with the E63 and E63 S Estates, as the Audi RS6 Avant is outdated and the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo is less roomy and more expensive. BMW and Jaguar don’t have a contender in this niche, so Affalterbach’s machine is, for now, the one to go for. Does this mean it’s perfect?
