VW Wants To Make An Arteon Shooting Brake And Give The Atlas A V6

The Passat CC was only offered as a four-door coupe, but its more upscale replacement, the Volkswagen Arteon, could actually welcome a second body style.

Nothing is official yet, but there is a chance that we could see a Shooting Brake version of the new Arteon, reports AutoExpress, after talking to one of the company’s chiefs for medium and full-size cars, Elmar-Marius Licharz.

“I would like to make a Shooting Brake – these plans are underway, but it’s not yet final”, Licharz said.

In addition to mulling an Arteon Shooting Brake, the German automaker is also planning to launch a new powertrain for the stylish sedan. And it’s not electrified in any way, for now at least, as it’s actually a six-cylinder engine. There is already a prototype out testing with the unit, and if it gets positive feedback, then expect to see it in the Atlas, too.

“If we build a six-cylinder engine, we are discussing it for the Arteon. We have built one already in a prototype vehicle. It will be one which you can also use in the Atlas and vice versa”, added Licharz.

By offering a six-banger fpr the Arteon, Volkswagen is strengthening its position against more premium rivals, such as its cousin, the Audi A5 Sportback and BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe. At the same time, it’s also stepping away from the Skoda and SEAT brands.

They could put a v8 in everything they build and cut prices 25% across the board, I’m still never buying a vw. Never!

Funny…I say the same thing about GM.

Rivals Audi A5 Sportback and BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe? More like Buick Regal TourX.

Doesn’t Atlas already have a V6? Some reviews rate it as underpowered so this may be a sign that they are testing a turbo 6.

    • TrevP

They do already have a V6. I wonder if the R-Line is the same or slightly more powerful.

  • Andrewthecarguy

The title is misleading…all the VW rep is trying to say is that the V6 would ALSO be used in the Atlas.

The rendering shows a 4-door wagon, not a “shooting brake.”

  • MarketAndChurch

It’s not a graceful design, so I can’t imagine it being worth turning into a shooting brake, but that doesn’t matter. If the European market wants it, then let them have it. Personally, I think they should just make a regular wagon and not sacrifice anything for the sake of looks.

“If the European market wants it, then let them have it. ”

They’re the only ones that will get it anyway…

Meh, the concept car CC Sport/Arteon was phenomenal. This production car was definitely downgraded starting with the cheap plastic looking wing mirrors that Audi adapted from the A3 on to every model (remember last gen A7 wing mirror matched the entire body)
Why can’t vw/audi produce a silver aluminum trim wing mirror that mounts to the window outliner at the A pillar like BMW/Infiniti/Lincoln do?
All they are doing is copying Lexus exterior body.

  • if an Aerton shooting break would look like that it would be a Passat Wagon.

  • NoSnarkHere

    That’s a passat

  • Looks like the “Why?” train had pulled in. Seems to be making a few stops at VW recently.

Been a while since I’ve seen a ‘chin render. Brings me back.

Anyways, the title is a bit gorey, and once again, unless they shorten the damn thing and give it two doors, and two doors ONLY, it’s not gonna be a shooting brake!

As far as I know the Arteon will get a turbo-charged VR6.
