Discovery’s Velocity Channel Rebranded As Motor Trend Network

If you’re a car fan in the United States with a cable television package, chances are you’ve watched a show or two on the Velocity channel. Now that channel is being re-branded as the Motor Trend Network.

The new channel will continue airing popular programs like Wheeler Dealers, Bitchin’ Rides, Barrett-Jackson Live, and Garage Squad. But now it will also include video content from Motor Trend as well. At the same time, subscribers to the Motor Trend OnDemand service will get access to Velocity’s programming as well.

Even those without a cable package will be able to view content on motortrend.com and on the Motor Trend App. The app is already available on iOS, Google Play, Roku, Xbox, Chromecast, and Amazon.

The restructuring will allow Discovery and Motor Trend to expand access to markets outside the United States as well. The company recently launched on Amazon Channels in the UK, for example, and will soon launch a free-to-air television channel in Italy.

“No other global media company has the content, and both the TV and digital platforms, to deliver what auto enthusiasts want than Discovery,” said group president Michael Lang.

“This rebrand of our JV into one, over-arching single brand, Motor Trend, continues Discovery’s long-term digital ambition; underscores our commitment to serve passionate global auto-related superfans with the world-class content they crave; and provides OEMs, buyers and advertisers with an unparalleled one-stop, 360-degree branded environment to reach this coveted audience segment across all screens and platforms,” he added

The rebranding comes as part of Discovery‘s comprehensive restructuring of TEN: The Enthusiast Network as the Motor Trend Group. TEN is a joint venture between Motor Trend’s publisher Source Interlink, Discovery Communications, GoldenTree Asset Management. In addition to the headline property, it includes other automotive publications like Automobile, Hot Rod, and Truck Trend.

I knew something was up when I kept seeing as for the MotorTrend app every five minutes and when they started airing episodes of Roadkill.

Remember when ESPN bought the Speed Channel and ruined it? Speed had the best auto racing program of anybody and now nobody broadcasts such a variety of speed sports.

    • Panzer966

That is very true. I miss SPEED.

    • Vern Suesse

That was Fox Sports that bought my beloved Speed Channel and ruined it.

    • Six Thousand Times

I think you’re remembering ESPN calling their motorsports package “Speedworld” which sounds like “Speedvision,” the original name of Speed TV.

      • Jerry Hightower

Picky, picky, picky! Whoever it was doesn’t matter! The gist is that they ruined it!

        • Six Thousand Times

          What?

  • TB

That sucks…I think Velocity is much better than Motor Trend Channel.

  • DR.FUNK

Love the Velocity Channel…not happy about this.
Does it get much clunkier than Motor Trend Network?
Let’s hope the new crew programs the network better than they name it.

I just hope they don’t end up ruining it. I watch Velocity a lot so I’d be very pissed if they do.

  • Honestly except some shows, I don’t really watch velocity because it panders to US audience, which prefers bunch of guys doing an extremely not scripted show about building/flipping/modifying cars on short budget and with totally real dramas in between.

Sorry to say to. Discovery ruined Wheeler Dealers. The original UK format is fine, it’s not really scripted and we got to see some tips from Edd.

Motor Trend is okay, sometimes they produce a rather good segment, remember Downshift? they should bring that again.

Why can’t I get Velocity on DISH?

  • Johnny Delvisco

Well the first thing MotorTrend Network does when they get in power is CANCEL the Fantomworks show. Yep, I said it. This is probably the best show they have and they AXED it. Season 9 is going to be the last. For them I’m sure it’s like continuing to finish a football season when you KNOW you have no chance of getting to the Superbowl. Problem with that really is……Fantomworks was a whole lot more educational to watch instead of some of the other crap such as Road Kill Garage. Been watching Fantomworks since the first episode and it’s a shame because none of the other shows care more about the cars than Fantomworks. Good Job Motortrend,,,,,,,,,,Just like G.M. you always gotta ruin a good thing. Hope you and your suits are very happy togetther
