Ferrari Portofino, McLaren 720S, Kia Stinger Earn Top Marks For Design In Red Dot Awards

Want to see who designs the best products? Look no further than the Red Dot awards. Every year the European organization identifies what it determines to be the best designs on the market – and that includes automotive design.

The committee has released its list for 2018 and it’s awarded top honors to the Ferrari Portofino, McLaren 720S and Kia Stinger.

Each earned the honor of being counted among the “Best of the Best”, but they’re not the only new cars the jury has noticed this year. Along with them, Kia won additional Red Dot awards for the Picanto and Stonic and Ferrari won the same for its 812 Superfast and FXX K Evo.

BMW was recognized for the 6-Series GT, X2 and i3, Hyundai for the Kona and Nexo FCEV and Volkswagen was singled out for the T-Roc and Polo. Further Red Dots were slapped on the Skoda Karoq, Seat Arona, Alfa Romeo Giulia, Nissan Leaf and Volvo XC40.

The 2018 awards mark a particular accomplishment for Kia. Not only did it take two Red Dots, but its Stinger sports sedan was recognized alongside six-figure supercars. Combine those with the two earned by Hyundai, and the Korean group emerges with some of the best designs on the road.

Nice work by Ferrari, too, especially considering how small its exotic lineup is. And between its various brands, Volkswagen took home four awards – though not a single one from any of the more upscale brands under its vast umbrella. Also noticeably absent from the list are major automakers like Toyota, Honda, General Motors and Mercedes-Benz. But there’s always next year.

    Well picked, I think.

  • Portofino really?

  • Honda NSX-R

Drove a Stinger GT1 AWD today, great car.

  • Belthronding

720S does not have better looking than 675LT and i am not so sure portofino is the best looking ferrari recently.but it is all ok with kia.

  • Julien Lachemoi

You know time has passed when people are surprised a Ferrari was rewarded for its looks but they agree when a Kia was rewarded as well.

    • bd0007

Over the past decade, Kia probably has won more auto design awards than any other auto-maker.

  • Bash

The stinger is amazing, but how many are they selling per month now?

    • They do attract people to showroom.

      • Honda NSX-R

Like I did, a few times before I got to actually test drive one.

    • john1168

I’d buy one if they sold a GT2 in the color combo I want. Panthera Metal w/ red interior. Can’t get it in a GT2 but you can get it in lesser models which is asinine.

      • Bash

You sir have surpassed first world problems :D:D:D:D

    • bd0007

      Sold 1,555 last month.

      • Bash

Cool, I still have to see them on streets tho.

        • Honda NSX-R

I’ve probably seen 3 so far on the road

          • Bash

I saw one, just one on the road.

My wife and I purchased the 2011 Kia Optima Turbo SX and to this day as I’ve told everyone it’s a Timeless design and looks like a brand new car. We just turned 70000 miles and not a thing has gone wrong with it. A 2 L Turbo has 274 horsepower at 1750 RPMs and it’s paddle shifters work seamlessly. I know the tuner crowd increases the 18psi 2 21 PSI to pull out another 40 horsepower. Looking forward to test driving the Kia Stinger all-wheel drive.

      It’s timeless for 2011.

  • Shobin Drogan

Portofino is a very strange looking car. But I agree with the other picks. The McLaren looks like sculptured art and the stinger finally got the recognition it deserves.

  • SteersUright

Hmmm….those are NOT the most beautiful cars out there.

    • alexxx

Shame you are not among red dot judges 😂😂😂

  • Ron

Is this an April fools joke coming in a little late? The Stinger looks like a kitted up Optima, there is nothing special about it.

    • Liam Paul

they look nothing alike other then the window shape, oh wait, your comment was a april fools joke right?

    • bd0007

Looks NOTHING like the Optima aside from the greenhouse (where it is more similar to the previous Optima than the current one).

Also, the previous Optima won just about every auto industry design award, including the Red Dot.

  • Carenthusiast

Not for 720S’ headlights though! It definitely could’ve been better

  • Bash

    Good to know.

  • LJ

I’m clearly in the minority, but I don’t see anything special about the Stinger’s styling. The car may be awesome, but it looks like an overly busy previous generation Optima on steroids. And yes, I’ve seen one up close in person.
