Maserati Sebring Design Envisions A More Sophisticated GranTurismo Successor

Maserati has been moving full-steam ahead with sedans and crossovers. All the while, we’ve been wondering if and when the Modenese automaker could replace the GranTurismo coupe with something new. If and when it does, it’d do well to look a little something like this.

Rendered by one Igor Jankovic, this design calls for a rebirth of the classic Maserati Sebring. One of the Trident marque’s most legendary models, the Sebring was a 2+2 grand tourer built in the 1960s.

Closely related to the 3500 GT, the Sebring was powered by an inline six in a form designed by Giovanni Michelotti for Vignale. But this latest design looks like it’d do well with one of Maserati’s latest Ferrari-made turbo engines. Like the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 in the new Levante Trofeo, for example, with its 577 horsepower (590 ps/430 kW) and 538 lb-ft (730 Nm) of torque.

Jankovic actually published his design on Behance over three years ago. But to our eyes, it still looks current – even ahead of its time. The lines seen on the Ghibli and the latest Quattroporte seem to translate well to a two-door form with even sharper creases.

As a replacement for the GranTurismo, it couldn’t come a moment too soon. That model is over a decade old already. And it’s underpinned by woefully outdated building blocks. The Sebring looks like just the grand tourer Italy would need to take on the likes of the Mercedes S-Class coupe and Aston Martin DB11, to name just a couple of its likely competitors.
