New BMW M5 VS Mercedes-AMG E63 S Race Reveals A Different Winner

BMW M5 vs Mercedes-AMG E63 S

If you think it’s a coincidence that BMW and Mercedes-AMG refreshed their heavy-hitting sedans at approximately the same time, think again. These two brands have been trading punches for decades and the latest versions of the automakers’ high-performance sedans are closer than ever.

In a recent video by Carwow, we watched a BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG E63 S take on one another in a drag race. The M5 features a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that generates 592 hp (600 PS) and 553 lb-ft 750 (Nm) of torque. The AMG E63 S, on the other hand, is a little more powerful. It’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 cranks out 604 hp (612 PS) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque.

The outlet did a few quarter-mile runs and found that the E63 S, with its popping and snarling exhaust sound, continually beat the M5. Interestingly, in a recent test TheMotoristSA completed with the help of Top Gear South Africa to recreate the drag race and a new winner emerges.

Spoiler alert, in the video below, the M5 manages to beat the E63 S by what looks to be a half-car length. It’s a surprising result, as in the other videos we’ve seen, AMG’s sedan manages to run away from the BMW handedly and anything else that attempts to take it on.

There are a few reasons for this, though. As we saw in a recent dyno video, the M5 makes more power than BMW lets on. So this one could be packing a little more juice than other models. The other reason, which is more plausible, is that the driver behind the wheel of the M5 gets the jump on the E63 S. Still, with more power, the AMG should be able to at least make things a little closer in the end.

If anything, this video brings more questions to light than it answers. With a new Audi RS6 right around the corner, things could get even more complicated in the high-performance sedan segment.

you cant be serious Top Gear South Africa, no one noticed the cheating? Not even the video editor??? hmmm

At 2:29 the driver of the M5 is already moving for solid 1.5 seconds Before the hands go down. THAT is called CHEATING, although it may not have been intentional. That does require a re-start, again. Top Gear South Africa left lane driver cheated, period.

    • donald seymour

I literally was thinking the same thing. I really couldn’t believe my eyes that it was so blatantly done.

    • xDRAN0x

      typical TG bs

    • Kaisuke971

The car is moving because when its launch control is engaged, the rear tires spin to launch faster. But if you keep it engaged like he did, the car will slowly creep forward. At that point he hadn’t launched yet. While it does bias the race towards the M5, i’d hardly call that « CHEATING ». He isn’t jumping the gun, the car just isn’t stationarry before starting.

      • Six_Tymes

lmao. you actually think rolling a ahead isn’t cheating. the next time the Olympics are around, ill be sure to inform one of the runners that its OK to start moving before the fire of the gun shot start, they can then just inform the judges they were just warming up and that’s its not cheating. PPUUUUULEASE.

        • Matt

It wasn’t intentional, the brakes couldn’t hold the car during the launch control process.

Not intentional = not cheating. Unfair? Of course.

          • Kagan

            It is still cheat.

        • Kaisuke971

Well actually, in drag racing it’s considered a start after the car’s front tyre has made one complete revolution (the so called « one ft rollout), so if you car just ever so slightly moves before the actual start it could still be a valid start.

    • benchara yanis

add to that the Merc driver is taller and overweighted !!

    • Jay

I see what you’re saying but don’t they do several runs of these races? They cut and place different sections of each race together. We hardly ever get a full race with no cuts so who knows how many times they actually raced but maybe the M5 won every time.

  • Zhaokun Zhou

They say M5 has a break in service. After that, more power will be released.

  • Vassilis

Every time I see a comparison between a modern M car and a modern AMG car I can’t help but think how AMG has bettered M. It’s crazy. 10-15 years ago it wasn’t even close.

    • Brabusbus

With turbos everythings is easier, when AMG wasn’t used the turbos ///M is wayyyy better.

      Even 6.2L C63 can’t beat the 4.0L M3.

      • Vassilis

I don’t think it’s a turbo thing because M’s turbocharged engines are worse than AMG’s. If that was it M would keep the edge. But yeah their N/A engines were magnificent. The same way AMG’s 4.0 V8 is.

  • Kagan

This type of videos and tests are bullshit because it is much up to the driver, and the indivduel difference between cars are bigger than the test time differences and the cars can be and are manipulated by autodelers/makers. It is enough to just switch to different tyres.

  • Truenorth 1960

Pretty evident in both races that the m5 driver takes off first. Get serious. Pay offs or just dumb fcuks?

  • wait a minute

With or without a head start the M5 was creeping ahead of the AMG

  • Shahul Usman

haha.. nice try.. cheat much? every single other drag race has the AMG ahead and by more reputable testers.. I think the magic days of BMW are over… maybe now they will try harder on the interiors?
