Have you been yearning to drive the Honda Civic Type R, but for one reason or another can’t get your hands on one? This could be the next best thing.

The developers at Turn 10 have added the Japanese hot hatch to Forza Motorsport 7 as part of its latest update. And, best of all, it’s absolutely free – no special downloadable content packs or subscription plans needed.

Unfortunately it’s the only new car added so far this month. But what a car it is. As far as hot hatches go, the latest Type R is arguably the ultimate. Demonstrably the ultimate, actually, having taken the front-drive lap record at the Nurburgring away from the Renaults and Seats that have been fighting over the bragging rights for years now.

The specs should be familiar by now to any hot-hatch enthusiast. The top Civic packs a 2.0-liter turbo fou, sending 306 horsepower to the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. No trick all-wheel drive systems, no fancy paddle shifters. Just old-school muscle in a versatile package that you could enjoy every day.

That is, if you can get one. It’s priced from a relatively modest $33,900. That makes it a performance bargain, but of course not everyone has that kind of cash just sitting around. So if you don’t, but do have an Xbox (or PC) and a copy of Forza 7, you can drive it virtually to your heart’s content. It should already be in your digital garage if you have the Car Pass subscription, or you can download it manually (for free). Sure beats a minivan, doesn’t it?
