1985 Renault R5 Turbo 2 Evo Will Help You Make A French Connection

Whether it’s the original R5 Turbo or the Turbo 2, driving any one of them should be on just about every petrolhead’s bucket list. Also, they’re pretty rare, so whenever one comes up for sale, we take notice.

Here is a 1985 R5 Turbo 2 Evolution, chassis number #49 of 200. It’s currently being auctioned off on Bring a Trailer, where it should end up fetching quite a hefty sum of money.

Aesthetically, this R5 Turbo 2 Evo is painted black with grey trim and features an aluminum roof as well as the nameplate’s iconic boxy flared fenders. According to the ad, the car also has its factory alloys, currently fitted with period-correct Michelin TRX rubber.

The car’s tan interior boasts cloth seats, black floor mats with Turbo 2 lettering, an original Iso Delta steering wheel, and two after market oil pressure and boost gauges added to the center console. Visually, there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with the cabin, which should come as a relief to any potential buyers.

Powering this R5 Turbo 2 Evolution is a 1.4-liter inline-four unit equipped with a Garrett turbocharger and intercooler and mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

The seller states that the car also comes with upgraded brakes and a custom exhaust system, while the odo reads 22,072 km (13,715 miles).

It was a good car. Very good for its age, especially if compared to Uno Turbo. Sole competitor, Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9, the 1.6 couldn’t keep up.

    • I don’t think it’s even comparable to Uno Turbo nor 205 GTI, while those two are actual hot hatch, 5 Turbo feels like sports car rather than hot hatch, in my opinion it doesn’t have a rival. Maybe you were thinking of 5 GT Turbo.

The Gt Turbo was the “vanilla” version. The GT evo had the same 1.4 with more spice in it. I really meant this one, as many compared this one with the 205 1.9 and, to an extent to the Uno Turbo (that was in Italy when enthusiasts did things to cars to compensate for the lack of equines so the two became comparable out of the fact that you’d rarely see a standard spec Uno Turbo in Italy in that time) But what made it really different was the fact that, unlike the others (including the vanilla R5 Turbo), this one held the road much better. And it was really really fast….maybe too fast. It had almost the same HP the first Clio 16V had with less weight.

  • So clean and feels like brand new! Love it, you rarely seen black 5 Turbo as well.
