Mazda will launch the updated 2019 MX-5 in the UK this September, offering more powerful and efficient engines, as well as an upgraded range of driver assist technologies.
The most important revision in the facelifted MX-5’s range is of course the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine. The redesigned powerplant now produces 181hp (184PS), up from 158hp (160PS), while the redline has moved to 7,500rpm, up from 6,800rpm.
The 2.0-liter version of the popular Japanese roadster can now complete the classic 0-62mph (100km/h) in 6.5 seconds, 0.8 seconds faster than the outgoing model, while the new tuning of the exhaust provides a “cleaner, more powerful engine note”.
The added performance hasn’t come at the cost of efficiency however, as the new engine is fully compliant with the new WLTP/RDE test cycle and comes fitted with stop-start technology and Mazda’s i-stop kinetic recovery system as standard among others. Mazda says that all new MX-5s fitted with the 2.0-liter engine will emit less CO2 than the outgoing model, at 156g/km.
The smaller, 1.5-liter engine has also been updated with improved combustion and reduced internal friction, offering slightly more power as well at 130hp (132PS) and 112lb-ft (152Nm) of peak torque.
All models in the range also benefit from a new telescopic steering adjustment and “improved seat sliding operation”. Newly designed 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels have also been added.

Pricing for the 2019 Mazda MX-5 kicks off at £18,995 for the base 1.5-liter version, while 2.0-liter models start from £22,295. RF models start from £22,595 for the 1.5-liter model. Sales will begin in the UK on September 1.
