After years of development, the all-new BMW Z4 is finally ready, having made its official premiere in production guise at Pebble Beach last week.

It’s basically the continuation of the fifth-gen roadster that was dropped in 2016, and everything is new: design, platform, technologies, engines and even a retractable soft top instead of the hard top used by its predecessor.

BMW will only offer it as an open-top, but, predictably, someone has already rendered it as a coupe. That ‘someone’ is XTomi, who envisioned what a Z4-based coupe might look like.

Hypothetically speaking, the imaginary Z4 Coupe would be as fast, or even a tad faster, to 100 km/h (62 mph) than the Roadster, which takes 4.6 seconds to get there in the M40i that’s powered by a straight-six engine good for 340 PS (335 hp / 250 kW).

Full specifications of the new Z4 will be released on September 19, prior to the car’s Paris Auto Show debut a couple of weeks later. The first examples are expected to go on sale next spring.

Now, if you need your sports car to have a nice, fixed roof, then you’re probably better off with the next-gen Supra. It is Toyota’s offspring of the joint sports car project between it and BMW, and although it will have its distinct styling, it shares a lot of parts with the Z4 – plus, unlike its German cousin, it will be offered solely as a coupe.
