Every once in a while, we’re blown away by a particularly tuned car that simply devours the drag strip. And this second-gen VW Golf ticks all the right boxes.
On the outside, it has a few decals, smoked taillights, large wheels and, well, not much more really.
What makes it special resides in the engine bay, where you’ll find a VR5. The unit, which is derived from the VR6, has three cylinders on one side and two on the other, and 2.3 liters in displacement in stock form, making 150 PS (148 hp / 110 kW) and 205 Nm (151 lb-ft) of torque.

It was first introduced in the Passat, and was eventually adopted by the Golf Mk4, Bora/Jetta and Seat Toledo 1M. However, in this particular Golf, it has been heavily tuned to produce a whopping 850 PS (838 hp / 625 kW), according to the description of the video.
The vehicle is the work of Germany’s KR-Turbotechnik, and uses VW’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system. Over the years, it was constantly upgraded, up to the point where it’s now a 10-second car.
As for the latest runs, it was filmed doing 290 km/h (180 mph) during a Race1000 event, an achievement that has landed the tuner with the silver medal in Class 2 (750-1,000hp).
